WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-08-2022

Stanford women's golf hosts one of six NCAA Regionals Mon-Wed. 12 teams and 6 individuals will compete with the top four teams and two individuals not on a qualifying team advancing to nationals at Grayhawk in Scottsdale, AZ May 20-25.

Follow along at https://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=25454

Teams listed in order of seed along with national ranking. Teams who won their conference tournament and automatically qualified are in parenthesis
#1 Stanford, #12 U$C, #14 LSU (SEC), #24 Texas Tech, #25 Kentucky, Iowa State, Northwestern, Purdue, UNLV, Cal Poly (Big West), Princeton (Ivy League), Sacred Heart (NEC)

The tournament also features several Top 25 players
#1 Rose Zhang (Stanford), #2 Ingrid Lindblad (LSU), #5 Amari Avery (U$C), #9 Aline Krauter (Stanford), #12 Brooke Seay (Stanford)

I expect Stanford to go with Zhang, Heck, Seay, Krauter, and Ye with Sturdza as the alternate. I was told that Heck is still not 100% and that it's likely we will see Sturdza play in her spot on Tuesday. Unlike regular season tournaments, at NCAAs the alternate can be put in for any round.

Thanks for all the info.

Pairings for Round 1 are posted. Stanford's line up will be Zhang, Seay, Krauter, Englemann and Heck. Heck goes off first at 8 am. Sturdza is the listed alternate.

Btw, that line up is frosh, junior, senior, sophomore, sophomore with a frosh alternate.

I'm surprised to see Englemann in place of Ye. Neither has played particularly well in the spring season. But maybe Coach Walker is trying to see if Englemann is up to the challenge. It also means (I think) that Ye's career at Stanford has come to an end

Although Krauter is graduating, Megha Ganne is coming in next year. Coach Walker is just reloading, year after year.

So far the Stanford not doing well, but not that far behind.  Need to pick it up on back 9.

For some reason my post disappeared. While we aren't too far behind, only Zhang seems to be playing well. Heck is struggling, I wonder where her game went. Have to get better than this.

We’ve turned it around a bit and are now in a tie for third.

As has been noted elsewhere, Heck is recovering from mono. When I got it Senior Year at Stanford, it leveled me for my senior spring and I wasn't back to 100% fitness until nearly a year later.

RE: WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-09-2022

Thanks to a rally on the back nine, Stanford moved up to third after being as low as 9th or 10th early on and will stay paired with LSU & U$C tomorrow. Stanford was 9 strokes better on the back nine (-5 vs +4):
1. LSU -5
2. U$C -4
3. Stanford -1

Individually, Zhang & Seay are near the top of a very tight leaderboard with 21 players within 5 shots of the leader
T3 Zhang & Seay -2
T15 Krauder +1
T22 Englemann +2
T38 Heck +4

The pairings for tomorrow show Heck in the lineup, which surprises me a bit. But maybe she had a conversation with Coach Walker and convinced her that she's good to play. I hope it pays off

Perhaps Coach feels that even playing poorly, Heck is likely to play even with other players who might replace her.  There is also the chance she will pull out a round or two like last year's Heck which would probably put us in the driver's seat.  I figure Coach knows her players.

RE: WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - Spiny_Norman - 05-09-2022

If anyone followed the lead groups today of Rose Zhang/Ingrid Lindblad/Amari Avery and Brooke Seay/Brianna Navarrosa/Latanna Stone, they would have seen some of the best college players in the country playing like the best. All 6 of them shot under par - Stone at -4 has the individual lead.  Zhang, Seay, Lindblad and Avery are at -2. Navarrosa is at -1. The golf course seems to be set up perfectly to be a challenge for the field but to reward good play.

All 6 of those players will be paired together again tomorrow - Seay/Lindblad/Navarrosa start on #1 at 9:39; Zhang/Stone/Avery start at 9:50. If you are planning to watch, those are the groups to follow.

As a reminder, only the top 4 teams after Wednesday advance to the NCAAs. And only the 4 best scores count on a given day. If one player is off her game or struggling, that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the other 4 players since they know that their scores will count.

Edit - here is a recap of Day 1 at all 6 regionals - https://golfweek.usatoday.com/lists/college-golf-2022-ncaa-womens-regional-monday-recaps/

RE: WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - Softball Fan - 05-09-2022

I haven't been following.  I'm a fan of Heck and it looks like things might get interesting with all the Stanford players.   Where is this being televised or live streamed?

also the coach may want to get her more competition rounds before the nationals

The only way to see the action is to watch it live at the golf course. No tv or streaming for NCAA regionals.

Stanford's story on round 1 including comments from Coach Walker.

https://gostanford.com/news/2022/5/9/womens-golf-solid-start.aspx

Coach Walker on the round overall:
Quote:I thought we were a little tight coming out of the gate and that's to be expected. . . The conditions were hard - wind was blowing and it was cold. We were several over through the first six holes, then I saw everyone settle in, start to be patient and putts started falling. I was really proud of the way we came back to shoot 1-under for the day.

On Rachel Heck:
Quote:I think it was a big deal to have her get 18 holes under her belt . . I feel like she was right on the edge today, she was a little bit rusty. Anyone that took four weeks off would be rusty, and if she can play again tomorrow then that's a small win.

Sturdza has replaced Heck in the lineup for today.

Yep just noticed that. I'm heading for the course in about 30 mins to staff the timing checkpoint at 17. I'll get to see all five of our laides play that hole today.

Early in the round but Englemann has birdies on 1 & 4 and Krauter has a birdie on 3. The other three are even so far.

RE: WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - BigEasyCard - 05-10-2022

Early in Round 2, Cardinal currently three strokes behind leader LSU and seven shots clear of number five Northwestern.

Geaux Cardinal!

RE: WGolf @ NCAA Regionals - winflop - 05-10-2022

So the story on Heck is that she was in until the team was warming up on the range and she got sick to her stomach. I spoke to her mom who I've met several times and she's doubtful for tomorrow as well. Thankfully Sturdza stepped in and shot even par 71 today which is great to get from an alternate. Stanford dropped its only round above par today.

Stanford played very well today in blustery conditions, shooting 7-under. They are four shots behind U$C who was 8-under today. It's a three-horse race for the regional crown. What will be interesting tomorrow is a) can Stanford catch the Toejams and win the regional, and b) who's going to finish fourth among Purdue, Northwestern, and Iowa State and punch the other ticket to nationals.
1. U$C -12
2. Stanford -8
3. LSU -5
T4. Purdue & Northwestern +8
6. Iowa State +13

Aline Krauter tied for low round of the day and along with Zhang is 3 shots off the lead. Brooke Seay almost made a hole-in-one on 17 for her only birdie of the day.
T4 Krauter & Zhang -3
T10 Seay & Englemann E
Sturdza E (2nd round)
Heck +4 (1st round)
