i don't often watch horse racing, but this victory by an 80:1 long-shot is wonderful. rich strike was an alternate and did not even get in the race until a scratch 5 minutes before the deadline on friday. the jockey runs him at the back of the pack through 3/4 of the race and weaves him beautifully to the front at the last second. the press conference afterwards is great as well. the owner, trainer, and jockey are kind, caring, modest. youtube has video replays of the televised version, and nbc.com has an overhead view of the finish.

I really enjoyed watching this. My former firm had a Lexington office, and about half their marketing surrounded the Derby and all the social goings-on. Completely different atmosphere than Bay Meadows (back in the day), Tanforan, Albany Fields or the Southern California venues.
Seeing an 80:1 shot win, along with the reactions of the owner, trainer and jockey; was really a treat.

Fantastic ride. It helped that Messier tired because of the murderous pace. I think Corniche is by far the best three year old but the horse got caught up in the Baffert drama after winning the Breeders Cup Juvenile. He now is in the Pletcher barn and working well. Fletcher is readying him for Saratoga and the Travers and probably the BC Classic if he displays the form that blew away the fields in his three wins in 2021.
The best horse in the world right now IMO is Secret Oath, trained by D Wayne Lucas, who crushed the field in the Kentucky Oaks on Friday. There is a chance that she will battle the boys in the Classic a la Zenyatta. Or run in the Distaff.
The industry needs a great story right now since Baffert's problems have caused harm. If Rich Strike can navigate Pimlico (with a smaller field) then the Belmont will take on much hullaballoo. This could be America's Horse, somewhat like Alysheba or Tiz Now.

Like a lot of people, my horse-racing interest begins and ends in May/June with the the Triple Crown. What we saw yesterday was a stand-alone, super-duper, outta-the-blue treat. And almost as gratifying as the Dubs' beat-down of Memphis shortly thereafter.

Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed watching that. Never really followed horse racing outside of the Triple Crown, but I have an aunt who liked to go to the track back in the day. Been thinking of buying her a package trip to the Kentucky Derby.

The Breeders Cup is the World Series. The Derby is the all star game for teenagers.

Does the Breeder's Cup have Southern women in big hats or Mint Juleps?

If it’s at Churchill or Keenland. I prefer Santa Anita.

I was looking for Taiba since I had a bit on him. Rich Strike snuck up on me and Larry Colmas in much the same way that Mine That Bird snuck up on Tom Durkin.
Breathtaking move by jockey Leon to get by Messier.

Looked at from the front, Rich Strike essentially did a sidestep. Amazing.

When I first watched the race I saw Rich Strike make that inside move and I focused on him from that point forward. I didn't know what horse was coming up fast, but I could see he was going to overtake the leaders when he was 20 lengths back. They were hitting the wall and he was accelerating. The jockey was riding him hard, like he was being chased by a fire breathing dragon. When the track announcer finally noticed and called his name, I literally jumped out of my chair. Phenomenal run for the roses.

Go back and watch the replay of the full race. Rich Strike starts on the far outside and initially runs toward to the rail and tucks in behind the entire field. Then he slowly starts picking off horses one by one. What a fantastic run and considering all the extra effort expended to get to the front, even more astonishing. This is one of my all-time favorite races.

Also a fantastic ride by the jockey, Sonny Leon, who was the least known rider in the race and had never won a graded stakes race before.

I don’t think the announcer even mentioned “Rich Strike” until it had taken the lead.

Another amazing fact is that Rich Strike was acquired by his owners last fall in a $30k claiming race. How would like to be the guy that lost him to the claim?

BC, Larry Colmas usually gives a shout out to all the horses. He Called Rich Strike on the backstretch right around the blazing half mile.

Yes he did, but only as a side note. Didn't say the ". . . .and here comes Rich Strike" or similar until he had taken the lead. It was as if he materialized out of nowhere. . . .

The call could have been much better. He was focused entirely on Epicenter and Zandon, in the final stretch he even mentioned Simplification (who had no chance at that point) but not Rich Strike who was charging along the rail and gaining ground fast. Colmas literally shouted "Rich Strike is coming up on the inside" only after he had taken the lead and was more than a head in front. He was quick to identify him at that point but he missed the build up. Tough job I know.
