Men's Golf begins their quest for a national championship in earnest starting Monday at the Preserve at Spanos Park in Stockton. I've not yet seen an official liineup but I expect it to be this (Golfstat ranking): Michael Thorbjornsen (20), Karl Vilips (63), Barclay Brown (157), Henry Shimp (235), Alex Yang or Ethan Ng, Alternate: Ng or Yang
Stanford is the #3 seed in the regional among 14 teams, including four automatic qualifiers from winning their conference championship tournament. Five teams and one individual not on those top five teams will move on to play at nationals at Grayhawk GC in Scottsdale, AZ May 27-Jun 1
Teams at the regional in order of seed and their ranking in Golfstat
#4 Arizona St, #9 Washington, #16 Stanford, #21 LSU, #28 Oregon, #32 Nevada, #38 Liberty, #46 BYU, #54 UAB, #59 Houston, #63 UC Davis, Denver, Abilene Christian, Weber State
This regional is relatively weak, but Stanford will need their trio of Thorbjornsen, Vilips, and Brown to play well and for the rest to not fall apart. Not making the cut for nationals would be a significant setback for the program.

As you say the Big Three need to be the Big Three and we need another round at or around par. Interesting that several guys who played in the Match Play Championship in 2019 are still around but rarely see the tee box. Tough Game.
Also of interest Stanford had 4 guys make the cut at the Byron Nelson. Maverick is close enough now to be in the hunt. Between he and Rodgers they eagled 5 of the par 5's today. Bramlett and Wu are tied further down the list. McNealy has been playing well until Sunday then the wheels have often come off the cart. Hope this weekend is different for him.

Really couldn't have asked for a much better first day. Love how Thorbjornsen immediately rebounded from making double on 15 with an eagle on 16
1. Stanford -10
2. ASU -9
3. Denver -6
4. BYU -4
Three teams tied at -1
Also great to have four Top 20s, everyone in the top 30 and all better than course average for the day.
T1. Brown & Shimp -4
T18. Vilips & Thorbjornsen -1
T30. Ng E
Edit: Stanford tees off early with ASU & Denver on Tuesday

They are not as clear of #5 as I would like.

Nearly all of the teams with a chance of making the top 5 are in, and it's going to be an interesting finish tomorrow with eight teams vying for five spots. Among those seven teams, Stanford had the second-weakest round but is still in second place:
1. ASU -21 (-12 today)
2. Stanford -19 (-9)
3. Oregon -16 (-18!!!!!)
4. BYU -16 (-12)
5. LSU -14 (-13)
6. Denver -13 (-7)
7. Liberty -11 (-10)
8. Washington -9 (-12)
I expect the team cut to come in around -20 to -23.
Individually, Stanford remains well-positioned overall and Barclay Brown tied for the lead. However, the leaderboard is very packed at the top. The top two individuals not on a qualifying team move onto nationals.
T1 -7 Brown (-3)
T14 -4 Thorbjornsen (-3)
T21 -3 Shimp (+1) & Vilips (-2)
T31 -1 Ng (-1)
Should be lots of fireworks tomorrow, especially on the back nine. I expect the teams that do and don't qualify will come down to one or two great or bad shots

Stanford is headed to Scottsdale! May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk. A third solid round leading to a second-place finish. It was a little nip and tuck mid-round but with strong play over the last six holes in particular Stanford separated itself from the pack fighting for the last spots.
1. ASU -38
2. Stanford -28
3. BYU -27
4. Oregon -21
5. Liberty -18
Individually, we got strong performances from four of our five guys. Shimp struggled a bit and was the discarded score on the second & third rounds
T2. Brown -10
T5. Thorbjornsen -8
T25. Vilips & Ng -3
T43. Shimp +1
I expect the roster to be the same for nationals as it was this week, but I do expect Alex Yang to play at least one round during stroke play

Still some teams left on the course, but Stanford played well enough today to punch its ticket. More details to come once play is completed
Good to see the team play well in the regionals after two years of Covid-impacted results. You may recall that last year they didn't qualify, because just before regionals Brown and Shimp (?) came down with the virus. And of course, the year before that the season was cancelled. So this is the year they really get to defend the surprising Natty from '19.
Really looking forward to the next two weeks of golf at Greyhawk on the Golf Channel.

They were pretty consistent, -10 -9 -9. Shimp and Ng did what they needed to do. Brown and Vilips did ok, but they can play a lot better, hope they all bring their A games to Arizona. Looks to be over 100 degrees every day. It can make a big difference if you start early or start late. Going to have to pay a lot of attention to proper hydration.
Really looking forward to the next two weeks of golf at Greyhawk on the Golf Channel.

Slightly shocking that the 2022 Pac 12 Champions, Washington, failed to advance out of the regional. I was half expecting some sort of battle back from them today, but nothing seemed to occur.

Scottsdale will be 106 degrees. In the shade. I was just there and it was awful.

Brown finished T2, one shot off the title. That's better than OK. He also kicked @$$ at Pac-12s. He's playing really well right now.
