WBB: UConn...Stanford..what's the diff? - crackpot - 05-17-2022

I could think of about 3827 things, but okay Geno.

Doing a coaches tour, Geno was asked about what makes a successful program:

"That's a lot harder than you think it is," Auriemma said. "It's not as easy as, 'Hey go to UConn, come play for us.' It doesn't work that way. It's really hard. Let's say you start with 100 kids, ninth-graders, by the time they get to be seniors, 10 of them can play for you ... and everybody in America wants those same 10. And I mean, why would a kid go to Stanford instead of UConn? What the hell do they have that we don't have? You're recruiting against some really, really tough schools so you have to get the right kids."

Geno is saying recruiting against Stanford (because of all our university has to offer) is really hard. I think that’s evidenced by many of the recruiting battles we’ve won against them over the years. He’s very tongue and cheek sarcastic in his media responses. Interesting he singled us out only if so?

Yea I don’t think he was being negative towards Stanford. After the whole Rebecca Lobo incident, I think he’s mellowed out towards Stanford and has a lot of respect for Tara and her program. I’m probably one of the few, but I actually really like Auriemma. He’s a great coach and a fantastic recruiter.

Does he get a lot of the top recruits? Absolutely. But he actually does something with them and they play pretty basketball. Just because you have talent doesn’t mean you’ll win - look at the Duke women during the Goestenkors years, Texas women’s volleyball, etc.

As you guys probably know, as a former Nutmegger, I'm with Sakibomb here. Geno has had some really classless moments (see, e.g., anything involving Muffet McGraw, who gives classlessness as much as she takes it), but I think he's an excellent coach and player developer, and his teams have always played good, clean, pretty basketball. And I continue to just be in awe of how well he prepares his players for going pro. It's hard to find a roster without one or two Huskies players on it, and not all of that can be explained by recruiting alone.

As to his comments about Stanford, I also took them to be sarcastic - obviously recognizing that Stanford is hard to recruit against even when you have 11 championships.
