Men's golf begins their quest for a repeat of 2019's National Championship on Friday, with a practice round tomorrow. They are playing the same Grayhawk Raptor course that the women have spent the last week playing. The lineup is the same as it was for regionals:
1. Barclay Brown
2. Michael Thorbjornsen
3. Karl Vilips
4. Ethan Ng
5. Henry Shimp
Alt. Alex Yang
Expectations are not as high as they were for the women's team. I think they should make the initial cut after 54 holes into the top 15, and that the season would be considered a success if they made the top 8 after 72 holes and qualified for match play.

Playing in the afternoon wave, when the wind typically picks up, Stanford played decently and sits in the middle of the pack after the first of four rounds that will determine the individual champion and the 8 teams that compete for the national championship in the match play bracket.
1. Vanderbilt +1
T16. Stanford +15
Individually, Thorbjornsen played well but is our only player in the Top 20
T15. Thorbjornsen +1
T41. Vilips +3
T81. Ng +5
T100. Browl +6
T121. Shimp +7
They will need to play better going forward if they want to make the final 8.

Am I remembering this season correctly that there have been several times where we started slowly and then turned it on in the end? I hope this is one of those times!

It's been a little bit of a mixed bag most of the season - sometimes they get off to a good start & fade and other times they started slow & improved. They really hadn't put three good rounds together all year until Pac-12s & regionals, so I just don't have confidence in what's going to happen. Right now they're at risk for not even making Monday's final round. Only the top 15 teams after 54 holes get to play on Monday and then the field is cut to the top 8 for match play.

At this point I think we are toast unless a miracle happens. +10 today after 9 holes and +25 over all. A par is a rare animal.

Going the wrong direction today. Worst round among teams on the course and have dropped to 24th with a few holes left to play. Position will improve some as the afternoon groups play but at best they’ll be middle of the pack again

Although there is a lot of golf to be played, 4 teams have finished with scores of +2 +4 +6 and +9. Looking at play so far, it looks like there could be a pretty big gap between the top 4 and the rest of the field. It looks very possible for a brobdingnagian group being around +20 by the end of today. This would put us in range of making the top 15 if we can play well the next round, but it will have to be a really good round We had a lot more birdies in the second round but we still had to count 2 doubles and a triple in second round. Need a couple of rounds like Gupta of Oklahoma State had, - 5 with 2 bogies, a pretty amazing round on that course.

Not all teams have finished, but we are currently in 22nd place, about 5 strokes from 15th, and about 10 strokes from the eight place team that would qualify us for maych play.

Getting less bad as time wears on. We are now in a tie for 20th, just 3 shots behind 15th place and 6 shots out of 8th place. Nine teams that are ahead of us are still on the course, so our odds for tomorrow are not long at all…BUT we will have to up our game.

It has gotten less bad. Stanford is currently tied 14th and in a complete logjam. 8th place is only 3 strokes better and there are six teams within five shots of catching them.
I know Coach Ray well enough to know that he HATES double bogeys, especially when his team has to count them. I can just imagine him saying (not to his players), "Every gray hair I have is from counting a double" LOLOLOL
But seriously, they'd better find their A games tomorrow or it's gonna be an all-to-early trip home. Match play is still possible, but if they don't make the cut I think Coach Ray would be the first to say that it was a disappointing year.
Looking to the future, the problem is that there really isn't any firepower coming in the door next year. The two guys he signed are below 500 in the amateur rankings, and he loses Shimp who while a marginal player is nonetheless still better than others on the roster. Menon also graduates but he rarely appeared in the lineup and only in fall season.

Other schools on the course all dropping strokes so there's a good chance of being in the top fifteen after today, within striking distance of the top eight, but as others have said Stanford will need to play much better to reach match play.

The course has played easier in the morning vs. the afternoon. If Stanford makes it into the top 15 by the end of today, I think they will tee off early tomorrow. Could be a big help.

Stanford will finish the day in a 3-way tie for 14th place, 3 strokes out of 8th place. It will be a dogfight to make the cut, then advance to match play.

Definitely doable with a good day.

Stanford just got a big break in its tee times for tomorrow. 3 teams tied for 14th (Stanford, Oregon, Florida) at the end of the 2nd round but only 2 of them could play in the morning round tomorrow. In general, the golf course has played 2-3 shots easier in the morning
I don't know how they chose (maybe they drew lots), but Stanford will play starting at 8 am with Oregon and Texas Tech. Florida will have to wait until 11:20 to begin its rounds.

A sad performance so far today. Haven't even finished 6 holes and we are 7 over with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 3 bogies and 1 birdies. For the tournament we are 21 over on the par 3's, 25 over on the par 4's and now 6 over on the par 5's Our top 3 just haven't got the job done.
It is always possible to turn things around and have enough other teams fall apart that we make the top 15 but I am not optimistic. I had hoped for a good start today.

Yeah, tough day today. We are at +16 for the day, and it is looking nearly impossible to claw back the 10 or so holes it will take to make it into the top-15. Looks like the end of the line for Stanford mens golf.

Stanford's season ended a day earlier than it should have, missing the cut by 5 shots. You just can't go out and shoot one of the worst rounds among all the teams on cut day when you're start the day on the cutline.
I'm sure Coach Ray is deeply disappointed with this result, but if you look at the body of work this year it shouldn't be completely surprising. There just hasn't been consistent enough play from the top three (Brown, Thorbjornsen, Vilips) and they've had minimal support from the rest of the roster. There is a talent gap between Stanford and the top teams in the country, and it looks to get larger next year with both incoming freshmen ranked outside the top 500 and at least two players leaving (Shimp & Menon, possibly Ng & Tuleubayev as well).

Agreed, the a lot was expected of the top 3 but the fact is they haven't played well on anywhere near a consistent basis. I expected guys with their rep would play at least a couple of decent rounds on this course, I don't think we ever broke par. Next year doesn't look all that good unless they make some major improvements over the summer. 90 holes of golf and 3, just 3 birdies total. You can't win playing that kind of golf. We were the worst team on the par 3 holes and only 2 from worst on the par 5's. Just plain lousy golf today.
