WBB 2022-2023 season - stopandpop - 05-30-2022

A good friend in Omaha NB told me he overheard on a sports writers' radio chat that Creighton is coming to the Farm to play Stanford on Tuesday, December 20th. I could not find any links, but I trust my friend's info.

As all of you probably know, the Bluejays (or 'Jays') made the Elite 8 this past season.  Quality opponent.

Thanks for the info!  BTW, I’m not sure this needs to be labeled as an outside topic.

Probably done by mistake. I've removed the Outside Topic tag.

Newcomers are always welcome, and we all make mistakes from time to time. You'll get the hang of it. Welcome to the group.

Hannah's 3x3 games today, won 1 lost 1. Play is very ragged; not much passing; and they are playing outdoors next to a large body of water

That's a nice place to play, right next to the water, looks like great views

She was listed as a coaching intern for this past season, iirc.

Hannah has one of the quickest releases I have seen in a while, but she remains a streaky 3-point shooter, especially when her defender challenges her.  I saw major strides in her ability to drive and shoot the mid-range jump shot and she has improved her defense, but she has trouble with many of the quicker more athletic perimeter players.  Hannah is most dangerous when she is open and in rhythm, but she can be even better when she mixes it up, fakes the 3, and goes to the basket more often.  Solid player.

Sounds like a great event - no idea if Tara there in person. Color me jaded but the wording of Tara's CURRENTLY having the most wins seems bizarre. Can't help but wonder if the word CURRENT would be there if it were Geno, in this UConn-infatuated area.

ha! i agree that it sounds odd, but imo likely innocent. they also write current coach at stanford, and it could be "current but not for long." but to me "current" is there to contrast with "former" in the bio's of most of the other panel members, so it's actually a compliment.

RE: WBB 2022-2023 season - stopandpop - 06-15-2022

Nivar averaging 7.7 ppg after USA's/FIBA U18 3 games and 3 blowouts.  While she had a 3 turnovers in the last game, she also had 3 steals and I believe a couple of assists.  I like her aggressiveness defensively as well as her ability to drive to the hoop, absorb contact and score.

A long way to go before we have a sense of who the starting PG might be, but (so far), Indya appears a bit more athletic with more of a scorer's mentality than Talana, who definitely has some good skill sets; especially as a facilitator.

And now that Jzaniya appears healthy, where does she fit in all the mix?

The season just got closer as Lauren Betts will be arriving at Stanford today. Summer school starts soon

The 1996 WBB Olympic team.  Tara, Azzi and Steding

Just finished watching the three episodes - what an amazing behind-the-scenes look at that arduous odyssey to the gold medal. In a review in the Athletic, the director shares: There’s one story that didn’t end up making the film. It was the hardest cut we had to make. It was a story that Tara told us about a year to the date from the Olympic gold-medal game. After she went for a jog, she was in the shower and had a panic attack. She literally had to get out of the shower because she couldn’t breathe. She was worried about, what if I fail my country? What if we don’t pull this off? She wrote on a piece of paper, ‘I am Tara VanDerveer. I am the best coach in the country. We will win gold.’ From that point forward, she said she literally never had a single ounce of doubt. She believed in her philosophy, which was all business.” I wish they had kept that in because the first episode was pretty unflattering of Tara, including the infamous spat over Rebecca Lobo's selection to the team (Tara’s advocacy for bringing Venus Lacy onto the squad is vindicated in the gold medal game). Glad they found the footage to tell the story more fully, all these years later.
