I never really liked the "new" Old Pro. Thought it was too antiseptic. Loved the original that was like a cave.
Still, you'd think the city of Palo Alto could figure out a way to zone certain properties so only places like Old Pro can be there, and maybe even give the owners a tax break if they lease to places like the Old Pro that give charm to the area. Could also require higher taxes on other types of properties to incentivize having establishments that bring people together.
What fills the void as a sports bar in PA if Old Pro is gone?

The Patio. Scotty's on Emerson. Dutch Goose. About all I can think of.

Amazing this place lasted so long in Post-Modern Palo Alto. Alas, the "South Peninsula" I fell in love with once upon a time is history (who remembers
The Alley?). It now belongs to the ages.

You will have to travel but the best bar north of the Golden Gate is Rancho Nicasio in West Marin. Old time lodge feel and a decent menu.

Zot's is still around as is the Dutch Goose!
But yes, a lot of the casual dive bars we used to know and love have closed. Here's some of my long-gone favorites.
* The Oasis (Stanford Institution just north on El Camino)
* Antonio's Nut House (Mtn View on California Ave, funky vibe, pool tables)
* St James Infirmary (Long gone and long missed joint in Mtn View; Bigger than life-sized Wonder Woman doll!)
* Old Pro (Latest casualty although I wasn't a regular here)
* The Boardwalk (Sunnyvale, went their after league sports nights and didn't card pre-21 me. Thus a favorite)
A number of older South Bay bars were bought up by the company that owns Jakes. Most were upgraded and given a standardized menu. I like that they preserve the old favorites and they keep some of the vibe but they start to feel the same after a while. (Jakes, Jakes of Willow Glen, The Garret, The Garret Station, etc) I believe they also owned or at least ran The Oasis and Boardwalk toward the end.
Boscoe's Bones and Brew in Niles Canyon (near Fremont) though further from Stanford deserves a shout-out for their "unique" tap. Boscoe was a dog voted in as mayor of the small Niles community who now has an unusual after life. Lift his taxidermied leg to pour. I believe the place survived covid.

Pudley's on University was cool, and the owners were big Stanford baseball fans.

Talbots on California Ave in the ‘80s. Used to work in Palo Alto Square and go there for lunch (no drinking) or after work (drinking). Cigar room in the back. Its been Bodeguita del Medio for a long time now.

I'm a big fan of Zots under the Avenir Group's operation of it. I really like all of their other restaurants too - Town (San Carlos), Milagros (RWC), and Nola (Palo Alto).
Thankfully it will be less crowded this fall for watching road games.

Always liked the Oasis and used to go there regularly. Went to the Garret when I lived near Campbell, and I live about two blocks from Jake's of Willow Glen now. It's a good, divey sports bar.
