OT: Broncos sale and Elway's missed opportunity - FarmBoy - 06-08-2022

This came across my Facebook feed and thought others might find it interesting.

I know I would have a hard time parting with $36M, especially if I was at the end of my playing career with uncertain cash flow ahead of me, but still, seems like a no-brainer, honestly.

Happens to all of us. Around the same time, I bought Enron when I could have bought Apple...

Quote:As if that offer wasn't generous enough, Pat gave John a 100% risk-free insurance policy. If after five years John wanted out, he could sell his stake back to Bowlen for his purchase price plus $5 million. So not only risk free, literally get paid $5 million if he changed his mind.

I guess so. I remember some conspiracy theorists trying to convince me to just put $100 on bitcoin when it was less than a dollar. Oof, if wish I could go back and ignore their beliefs about lizard people, crisis actors, and gang stalking and just thrown $100 on it.

Must be due to that crappy education he received. ;)

You probably could also have made a ton of money from investing $100 with Bernie Maddoff in 1990, so long as you withdrew it before 2008.

Based on the 12% he was typically quoting people, your 1990 $100 would turn into 2007 $686.60, then turn into US$0 in 2008...

RE: OT: Broncos sale and Elway's missed opportunity - jonnyss - 06-09-2022

madoff aside, if he had read markets very skillfully, he could have put his 21 million in the nasdaq qqq in 1998 at 50 and sold it in 2000 at 120. he'd then have about 50 million.
if he'd reinvested in late 2002 at 21 and sold in 2007 at 55, he'd have about 125 million
if he'd reinvested in late 2007 at 26 and sold in december 2021 at 400, he'd have 2 billion.

so before we consider him a fool, how many of us got all those calls right and now have 100 x what we had in 1998? not i.

RE: OT: Broncos sale and Elway's missed opportunity - JJJ - 06-10-2022

I think highly enough of Elway to own 2 (replica) jerseys. But the discussion here isn’t apples to apples. What was at stake was a guaranteed 13.8% total return floor on a 5yr investment with potential for further upside based on how the organization plus the professional enterprise (NFL) performed, not whether one can time a volatile (stock) market correctly to buy at the lows and sell at the highs, which is pretty much impossible  (I’ve had my share of shoulda/woulda/couldas). Ok, add the credit risk that Bowlen wasn’t good for his word. While Elway may have had insight we don’t into the organization and thus had his doubts, those are pretty attractive risk/reward profiles most times, for me. My two cents’ worth, if that.

RE: OT: Broncos sale and Elway's missed opportunity - Goose - 06-10-2022

My guess is that Elway felt that being a minority owner constrained his ability to sell his investment and cash out. Cashing in the "insurance" provision may put his relationship with the Bowlen family (or Pat Bowlen himself) at risk, which Elway didn't want to happen. Selling out to an investor they didn't want could be even worse. He would have to wait for the Bowlen family to sell out to avoid this issue, which was at an unknown time in the future. I can see the risk profile on that front not being acceptable.

Fair point. Thanks.

ESPN crawler headlines today: Chargers owner being sued by sister and Orioles owner being sued by brother. Being a minority owner caught in the middle of these family spats doesn’t sound like fun.

Indeed. The only thing worse is when the family all agrees to something that you desperately don't want.

Might be a bit too off topic, and, if so, I wouldn’t mind if the other mods issued a quick course correction.  But crypto is a scam, it has always been a scam, and just because the early in croud could made money from the greater fools, doesn’t make it any less of a scam.

Yes, I agree it is a scam. Wish I would have thrown $100 on the scam.
