Atlanta Hawks promote Landry Fields to General Manager - Leftcoast - 06-13-2022
Wow .... Landry Fields' move from player to the Front Office is going well - Promoted from Assistant to Atlanta Hawks GM at age 33. He must be one of the youngest GMs in the NBA.
Do any of you have a good understanding of modern NBA front offices? It seems each team now has a very active "President of Basketball Operations" who is different from their "General Manager". There are other new (ish) titles thrown in the mix depending upon team. Does the GM still call all the personnel shots or is that responsibility shared? Do the newer titles represent a separation of budgeting from personnel decision-making or represent a functional difference, say Arena Management/Ticketing/Finance vs Player Personnel? It's all big, big money now so it's not surprise there are more hands involved.

It's really title inflation more than anything else. The PBO and the GM work together on personnel matters, with the PBO retaining ultimate authority but the GM doing much of the day to day work, including communication with other front offices, almost all communication with agents, being the point man on contract negotiations, draft preparation/strategy, etc. Ultimately it's a shared responsibility for personnel matters with the PBO being the senior partner, but being a GM is a big deal, congratulations to Landry who clearly is on the road to even bigger things.
