This would be quite the coup for the Big 10. No doubt that the LA schools are the eye candy for midwest ADs eyeing major media market exposure and easy-ish travel access.

UW, Oregon just don't fit that description.

Stanford and Cal *could* be invited, but it seems evident that the parties involved in the backroom dealing have no interest in that.

USC, UCLA in conversations to leave Pac-12 for Big Ten in 2024: Source - The Athletic

UCLA has been with the Pac-12 and its predecessor conferences since 1928 (PCC, AAWU, Pac-8, Pac-10) and before that the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since 1920. USC was a member since 1922.

So now, those schools will embark upon their compelling rivalry with Indiana, Maryland and Rutgers. Can't wait to see those games.

Nobody can be surprised by this, can they?  

You guys may get your wish that Stanford becomes a D3 athletic program.

Stanford and Cal could pay a massive price for not caring about and prioritizing winning in the "revenue" sports.

Stanford could probably get away with being an Independent, but Cal not so much.

I believe I posted on here last week that the SEC should add:

Clemson, Florida State, Miami, and Louisville to have 20 teams with Texas and Oklahoma. Seems now this absolutely will happen.

The Big Ten would then need to add 6 additional schools to get to 20.

- USC
- UCLA
- Notre Dame (Yes, ND will have no choice but to join a conference if these consolidations happen, and it won't be the ACC that is being taken apart)
- Washington

I read Oregon and Oregon State must be a package deal, so that complicates things.

Cal and Stanford would make sense for B1G from an academic prestige and media market standpoint.

Let's see how this goes "at the highest levels". I can certainly see people in the Athletic Department thinking this is a good idea but I am less convinced the rest of the school's "management team" will see it that way. For UCLA, I would expect they may even get some "advice" from the Board of Regents, who I suspect would not be supportive. I guess we will see. USC might do anything and probably have less people they have to get buy-in from. However, I suspect a lot of USC alums wouldn't like it, and that may count quite a lot.

Then the rest of the sports stay in Pac-12.

yes, very expensive to travel across country for 6 games (more in basketball), but perhaps the extra tv revenue more than compensates

but also a real hardship for the students to fly cross country twice during a school week. you basically have to leave a day earlier to get from here to the midwest/east coast. minneapolis is non-stop 4 1/2 hours but penn state is 2 flights and 9 hours total (each way)

even most pro leagues have geographic divisions (presumably) to cut down on travel.

another example of thinking $ rather than students.

The fact of the matter is that the Pac 12's reputation has tanked (thanks, Larry!), and this may be the only way to save the programs of Pac-12 schools.

That kind of travel schedule would have played hell with my assignment due dates and my studying.  This is solely about those TV broadcasting revenue dollars, and USC/UCLA are selling out.

You can thank Cal and Stanford too, for allowing their football and MBB programs to stagnate. It wasn't all Larry Scott's fault. He had bosses too.

If the LA schools leave, thinking the PAC is pretty much dead. Oregon will want to leave, and I suspect Washington as well. At that point there isn’t a natural home for Stanford unless the B1G takes us on. Going independent may be worth considering.

I'm shocked. I guess I always thought USC+ND would be more likely, with UCLA sticking with Berkeley.  But I guess UCLA had a price.
