The Pac is going down, I'm not going to pay to watch it - keekerdeekerr - 07-16-2022
My parents are ASU alums, I'm stanford, my sports life revolves around the PAC. The west is our identity there are alot of options for kids, we don't live and die with basketball and football. It's the conference of champions because of our breath. We are not the Big 10 or Big 12, it's ridiculous to expect our kids to travel across the country to play a game cause football and basketball are not making enough money and apparently USC & UCLA is in dire straits.
These are the 2 marquee programs in our conference and they hit a speed bump in their amateur sports income. After 100 years and 1 incompetent director that couldn't figure out the right TV Deal with a satellite company has basically led to this. I only had Comcast to watch the pac 12 network wherever I'm at, so yeah I was feeding the beast too. No mas.
I'd like to figure out a way across the PAC to basically cut the cord and not contribute anymore to this madness. Whether it's a petition or something I don't know. I will send a scathing email to both comcast and espn/hulu/disney in non pc terms you ruined the only reality TV I care about so I'm out. I'll also mention there are plenty of ways to steal your content, but won't watching the NCAA much anymore.

I’m watching the Open. Been up since 4. On NBC, a traditional TV Network!
Pretty remote on my hill, no cable so I need a DISH. If Stanford football goes to streaming I will be completely over college football.

Shouldn't we support the Pac even more now because the conference is steadily crumbling? Pac-12 sports have always been considered less than other conferences in all major sports. I'm hoping that the Pac can rebound stronger than ever. I don't know what I would do without this conference. I don't support any other and would have no interest in watching west coast teams in any other conference.
There is a new commissioner who has been thrown into the deep end and although I'm not sure what he can possibly do at this time I'm hoping he is Superman and can fix the problems over the years.

It's the only free board after the bootleg got sucked up. Season ticket holder since Harbaugh year 2 so I get my chisme from here, just never bothered to register or obviously say anything.
I'll admit though was drunk last night spelled name wrong, was with my cousins who are all ASU fans and we are all just so pissed and sad.

While I disagree with his thought, AFAIC, it's ok for him to say it. Furthermore, this board isn't about the PAC, it is about Stanford. We talk about water polo when it isn''t a PAC-n sport.
Let's consider the issue differently. Originally, why were athletic conferences developed? I believe it likely was to develop consistent rules/officiating/conditions among schools that competed against each other. It also allowed for a somewhat equal schedule among the members and a meaningful way to determine a champion.
Why aren't there different conferences for each sport? When appropriate there are. Besides the PAC-12, Stanford is in the MPSF (M&W water polo, artistic swimming), America East (FH), CSA (W Squash - all matches were Philly or further east), PCCSC (Sailing).
The conferences exist for their member schools. Moreover, I believe the conference only exists at the pleasure of those members.
One might think that UCLA & USC felt about the PAC-12 leadership like various posters here and so left the conference. What bothers me is that they seemingly did so without much notice or discussion with the other members of the conference. At least publicly, there was no known prior discussion of what about the rest of the PAC-12. Would a merger have been better, or a split and multiple mergers?
USC could be seen as wanting to avoid its past scandals and such. I can not believe that the NCAA hasn't put a multi-year, multi(all)-sport ban on USC for the recent corruption across the athletic department. I think the only two waiting for sentencing are the water polo coach and the pimp that lead everyone down the crooked path.
UCLA, especially as part of the UC system, is harder to understand why their departure was so sudden & disruptive.
Rather than boycotting the PAC-12, would it be better to try to have a boycott of all remaining USC & UCLA PAC-12 games in every sport?

UCLA President did not inform the Regents. Newsom: "I read about it in the media, like everyone else! -- and I chair the Regents."
Despite the fact that the Regents do not want to "sully their gown sleeves" with something as pedestrian as Football media negotiations...

The 18 UC Regents are APPOINTED to 12-year terms by the Governor.
They are not nominated up from Faculty lounges.
The difference is B1G media rights WITH USC, versus Pac-11 payouts without Troy.
Under Lincoln Riley and a high octane Offense, USC is on the upswing.
Newsom may grumble a lot, and then give in on the dough.
However... Will the UC Regents pony up an extra $30M-$40M PER YEAR to keep UCLA in the Pac-11? That's a lot.
The other UC Campuses won't like that. Coach Wilcox at KALSucks -- a word?

Do I think the Regents will do that? I give it 25% probability. I give it 25% probability they issue a statement saying they don't like it but there is nothing they can do at "this late date". I give it a 50% probability they issue such a statement and fire the Chancellor of UCLA for not keeping them informed. AFAIK, they don't have a "President". The entire UC system does, but he is on the Board of Regents. IMHO if that actually happened, he should be fired. Not informing the Regents about something of this magnitude is grounds for dismissal IMHO, but even better it provides a scapegoat.

Fair enough. As far as I remember, the software here makes it a bit of a challenge to register; I think there are some Stanford specific trivia questions to answer to weed out spam accounts and trolls.
And hey, I think to a lesser or greater degree a lot of us are getting frustrated with what is becoming of collegiate sports. As more and more decisions are driven by money, it is harder and harder to remember the reason we watch; that the players are supposed to represent student-athletes.
I don’t know that I am loudly going to proclaim a boycott, but I envision myself watching less. The end will come, not with a bang, but a wimped.

I hesitate to post this because I think most people know this, but if you have access to the internet, you can subscribe to Sling and buy the package that includes the Pac12 Networks (I learned that on this board). I’ve disabled it for now but will turn it back on before the first Stanford game I care about will be aired. (I guess it will be a football game only available on P12N.) Easy peasy. No cable TV subscription (except for the internet). So I *will* pay to watch it. And I don’t even live on the mainland. I guess that’s my PSA for the summer. I will shut up now.

The travel for UCLA and USC is going to be absolutely miserable. Looking ahead a bit, I wonder if UCLA will separate from USC? Their program isn't as prominent as the Trojans...at the end of the day, will they really want to remain in the B1G? And if their eye wanders, where will it wander to?
