6 Fraternities Disaffiliate from U$C - newguy - 08-14-2022

6 fraternities at U$C have decided to disaffiliate from the university in response to a crackdown on sexual assaults at fraternity parties.
there had been reports of violations, including fraternity brothers spiking girls' drinks with date-rape drugs, which prompted a response from the university.

I’m sure there is more to it, but doesn’t this sound like the disaffiliating fraternities are leaving so they can drink and hookup without university oversight?

To some extent, yes. That said, I was somewhat taken aback by one university mandate that they have security guards in hallways and stairs that lead to the rooms. . . .

When I think of Stanford Frat Boy why do I picture John Wilbur?

HAH! An L.A. kid who was one of Cactus Jack's boys! Spurned offers from Trojans and Bruins to  go the the Farm. Done good. Went on to a solid NFL career. (Cowboys, et. al.). Sad ending at age 71 (CTE). One of my heroes when I discovered Stanford football.

This sounds so stereotypical. USC frats are even more like the caricature of USC than the university itself.

It's one thing to be a Spoiled Child. Another to be knuckle-dragging, low-life mouth-breather with a Bill Cosby complex.  Eff all the guys to hell who violated these women. May their micro-putzes shrivel and drop-off (if they haven't already). .

Happened at Duke last year: Seven fraternities disaffiliate from Duke IFC

Not likely to happen at Stanford since the University owns fraternity housing so disaffiliation would not remove University oversight (and area real estate is prohibitively expensive).

When Stanford revoked SAE's housing privileges in 2014, a bunch of members - including a certain Kevin Hogan - moved to an off-campus house that held a ton of parties.

My daughter chose to go to a college that didn't have frats just to avoid the sort of crap that goes on in these places.  And my husband chose not to join one at Stanford, rather opted for an eating club, where he made many lifelong friends. He was glad that Stanford had that alternative option.

We have eating clubs?? I'm a current student in a fraternity and have never heard of this.

The verb tense should (unfortunately) be "had". They were abolished in the 2009-2010 school year. In fairness, it became very difficult to actually run the eating clubs financially. Keeping staff was impossible. One factor that obviously helped the eating clubs was that the dorm food on campus wasn't very good (best case). As the dorm food improved, their customer base dwindled.

I've never heard of an eating club at Stanford either, I'm '06. Only know the term from Princeton. Where were these clubs based out of?

Back in the prehistoric era ('80s), Toyon had the original eating clubs. Then Governor's Corner was built and they had 4 there too, of which I belonged to one for a year.

Wikipedia has a good write-up on eating clubs. They go back to the very early days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_Eating_Clubs
The destruction of the "L" was a big blow to the eating clubs, but in fairness they were having problems back in the 70's. Their facilities had become very run-down and there wasn't nearly as much of a social aspect to them as previously existed. They also didn't have the economy of scale that the Food Service (old name) had, so their costs were higher. The food generally was better than Stern and Wilbur, but that wasn't saying much. Hours were a problem too, because hiring a staff that would have food available basically all day was difficult. Not enough "customers" to justify it.

When I was in El Toro and Los Arcos in the early 1980s, the Eating Clubs were a fantastic and much welcome alternative to University food service. We hired the chefs who became like family members. Everyone knew and loved Mildred at Los Arcos. We had cookouts every Friday evening. Sponsored outings to San Francisco. Some of the best intramural teams on campus were organized at the Eating Clubs. Lars Ahlstrom, the Bootleg co-founder, was among the many people I met and friends I made there.

Some of my favorite Stanford memories were around the Eating Clubs. I was (and still am) upset that the University ignored 100 years of history when they unceremoniously bulldozed the clubs. Yes, the buildings needed a lot of work (or complete reconstruction). The alumni would have helped. The University never asked. But this action turned out to be a step in the University's plan to purge the campus of self-operating food services. A few years later, they took away the Suites' self-operated Eating Clubs (after 30 years of operation) and gave the concession to the brother-in-law of the guy who made the decision. It was self-dealing and really smelly. The Daily wrote several investigative articles on it.
