WBB: Carrington - Lorcan - 08-18-2022

Carrington not mincing words about Stanford not recognizing her as a player in the W or including her on posts about players who have represented the program. It also confirms that she left at the time because there wasn’t a scholarship available.

RE: WBB: Carrington - FOXO1 - 08-18-2022

Now that I look into it, it does look strange that there isn't a peep about Carrington on Stanford WBB's Twitter, while tracking every move of other players. Most of all, I don't think it represents how Stanford WBB fans feel about Carrington, as I imagine most look back fondly on her great contributions to the program, and I distinctly recall her writing glowingly about Stanford and Tara when announcing she was finishing her 5th year at Baylor.

RE: WBB: Carrington - crackpot - 08-18-2022

Did our new(ish) SID start the year after she left? With the Ogwumikes around (and, TBH, even if they weren't), it's easy to remember to include them.

And didn't she only play three years at Stanford, sitting out her entire senior year?

Still, she is fondly remembered and should have been recognized in the tweet.

RE: WBB: Carrington - BACardinal - 08-18-2022

This isn't Stanford being rude to Carrington. If you transfer whether it's a grad year or not your previous school doesn't really recognize you any more. Any reference to Dijonai and her school is Baylor. It's the same for anyone else who transfers programs.

I am a little upset the coaching staff didn't offer her for a 5th year. I thought she left on her own.

RE: WBB: Carrington - Card10Fan - 08-18-2022

This ties back to my sentiment about always having an available scholarship for unexpected reasons (in Carrington's case, an injury her senior year). As high caliber of a player as she was for our program, she absolutely  should have had a scholarship available to return for an extra year. It's not rocket science. She made our program better. The scholarship went to Anna Wilson instead. The situation should not have been one player or the other.

I'm going to be saying the exact same thing next year if Hannah Jump, Haley Jones, Fran, or Ashten want to return and there are no scholarships available for them. Plan and prepare for the unexpected and maybe that means savings a scholarship or two for said reason.

RE: WBB: Carrington - ca245 - 08-18-2022

Laudable to always have an extra scholarship available, but is the choice always cut-and-dry?
Suppose you are recruiting three 5-star players and have three scholarships available, but sort of expect that not all three will be accepted and will want to come. But, surprise, all three are accepted and say they want to come. What do you tell one of them? "Sorry, you can't come, I want to keep a scholarship open."?
Suppose you have still a scholarship available after the main recruiting push and find out you are very thin at a particular position (say, PG), do you offer the scholarship to a 3-star PG who happens to be available, or do you hold it open just in case a senior wants to come back?

RE: WBB: Carrington - Softball Fan - 08-18-2022

After being a scholarship athlete for four years, not being offered a scholarship in the fifth year is a good reason to leave.  School is expensive.  If I was Carrington I would definitely have resentment about it at some level.  As best as I recall at the time there were no cardboarders saying she left because no scholarship was offered.

I think you plan and prepare for the expected - which means Tara has a talk with each senior-to-be that she'd be interested in having back. If they're non-committal, then you go find a recruit that you really want to offer. I am sure Tara assumed that Carrington would use up her eligibility by playing that 4th year. When it became clear that wouldn't happen, there was no scholarship to offer her. I have no problem with how that went down, since it is a game of musical chairs.

If they did not offer her a scholarship I don't know how anyone could hold it against her that she transferred. Stanford should acknowledge her.

am i remembering wrong? wasn't there one scholarship available and 2 seniors who could return for graduate years - dijonai and anna wilson; and tara chose anna wilson instead of dijonai? if i have my years correct, there was indeed a lot written about that. dijonai was my favorite player for her time at stanford. that said, the roster tara chose gave us a national championship. dijonai is a better player than anna, but we needed another guard/defender more than we needed a world-class back-up to haley.

dijonai was robbed of a spot in the final four when uconn was not called for mugging her on her last second shot attempt.

RE: WBB: Carrington - BobK - 08-18-2022

Gee why did we only have 14 the following year? I’ll go with two sides to every story
Yes Moschkau graduated in three years and grad transferred to Wisconsin
Oh and Stanford won the National Championship

We discussed this extensively on the Cardboard and speculated about all kinds of possible reasons, but the most obvious one was that the only available scholarship had already been promised to Wilson at a time when we thought Carrington would complete her year of eligibility in her fourth year, but then she didn't, and that was that.  The only way to keep her would have been to break our promise to Wilson and pull that scholarship back, and Tara wasn't going to do that.

As far as holding an extra scholarship in reserve, that is a legitimate point, and one I have thought about.  It is not as if our 15th player usually contributes very much on the court.  But Tara seems to think that it is unethical to horde scholarships to Stanford for strategic purposes.

RE: WBB: Carrington - Jskass - 08-18-2022

exactly - she had unfortunate timing. But yes, probably it was an inadvertent error or poor choice to ignore her in WNBA and would be the right thing to fix it. Even though she did transfer, it was due to circumstances and she put her heart and soul into the team and every play out on the court!

RE: WBB: Carrington - chimera - 08-18-2022

The sequence as I remember it was that Wilson was trying for that extra year for a long while, in fact throughout that season, and they promised her a scholarship if she could get the NCAA to say yes, which they ultimately did.  That was during Carrington's senior year, the one she sat out despite a lot of promises that she would be ready, back soon etc.  They expected her back mid-season.  So her rehab took a lot longer than anyone thought that year or she decided she did not want to come back for only a partial season and sat out later in the season to preserve eligibility for a grad transfer.  The open scholarship was already promised to Wilson.  There was no scholarship available unless they broke that promise after Wilson was already petitioning the NCAA for that redshirt year.  Then in the early spring (I think early but springtime for sure) Estella Moskau decided to grad transfer and a scholarship opened up.  At that point Carrington had not transferred but was looking to do so.  Could she have stayed and gotten the scholarship Estella vacated?  I do not know but I would imagine yes because I don't believe anyone filled it and why not (unless they thought she bagged the latter part of the previous season when she could have played)?

I don't really have a strong opinion on the matter.  My sense of it is Carrington sat out late in the season and preserved her eligibility her last year at Stanford, intending to transfer and did transfer even after a scholarship opened up.  I do not know anything concrete to back that up, just some circumstantial stuff and hunches.  Take that for what it is worth.  There is nothing inherently wrong with her transferring.  I am not implying there is.  Should Stanford promote her as a Stanford athlete now?  IMO it depends on how they have done it historically, either as an athletic department or the WBB program.  If the policy is that if someone transfers they are considered to be of the school to which they transferred and not Stanford, thus no promotion of achievements, and it applies to all who transfer, ok, fine.  If they selectively apply that rule, not so fine.  I don't believe the official Stanford social media ever promoted Dodson, Moskau, Sniezek, etc., after they transferred but I am not sure.  Dodson was drafted so it is somewhat comparable. If they did but not Carrington, something is awry.  If they did not, it seems to be policy.

RE: WBB: Carrington - petersalas - 08-18-2022

D is so petty… she acts like she didn’t post on social media things to make it seem Tara or Stanford didn’t support the Black Lives Matter movement. She blocked me on Twitter when I respectfully mentioned that Kate and Stanford had posted something to support the movement and that fans don’t know what goes on behind the scenes and I just wanted to let her know that Stanford was posting in support.  I lost respect for her as a person and player after that. Look for the tweets and tell me what I did wrong??? @Stancard10

RE: WBB: Carrington - chimera - 08-18-2022

As to what to do about possible COVID year for the current senior class, I would take a guess that discussions were had about future plans long ago.  I would also suspect that as much as we fans want people to stick around, most of them are ready to move on either to the pros or just with life.  I would also guess that getting into grad school is hard to predict and saving scholarships and then finding out that the athlete can't stay in school would be the worst scenario for everyone - miss out on a good recruit holding the scholarship but player can't return.  So should they hold scholarships?  How many?  Enough for all?  Save one but who gets it if more than one want it?

Personally I never liked the extra COVID year all that much.  It disadvantages younger players when players ahead of them can stay the extra year but they can't.  It may be adding to transfers being so high now, grad transfers and younger players bailing when they see too many ahead of them for too many years on a roster.  It gave us silliness like 7 year players.  I loved having Wilson back last season but I don't love the extra year overall.  I would not be surprised if a couple of our seniors ended up grad transferring.  I don't blame them for doing that if they do it, because they get a free year of grad school.  I still think the COVID year kinda sucks at this point.

RE: WBB: Carrington - BostonCard - 08-18-2022

With regards to holding scholarships, remember what happened when we held a scholarship in case Jason Collins didn’t go to the NBA (he was a sophomore, so it would have been crappy to give his scholarship away) and then wound up missing out a chance to land Emema Okafor.

With that many balls in the air, it is a losing proposition, and you holding a scholarship open for a player who might not come back deprives us of an incoming freshman.

I believe in giving players a four years guarantee.  The fifth year has to be earned and is subject to availability.

Jason was a Sr who had missed two years with injuries
That said agree with you BC

RE: WBB: Carrington - BostonCard - 08-19-2022

You are right, Bob, which makes my point stronger.

Montgomery is quoted in the above article as saying he would approach things differently as a result.

DC is listed in the Stanford FBC, which I think is the appropriate place to recognize her time at Stanford. I don't think it is necessary or appropriate for an official Stanford site like GoStanford follow her Baylor-to-WNBA transition.
