Notebook: Fall Camp from gostanford.com -

In case you missed it. It was posted at gostanford.com yesterday.
Quote:SHAW DESCRIBED WHY it was important to have continuity in the coaching staff in a year in which the program wanted to make a deep dive into all aspects. Stanford was among five FBS programs with no staff changes during the offseason and is among three to have six assistant coaches who have remained on staff for at least seven years.
"We stripped away everything and rebuilt it starting with philosophy," Shaw said. "It's great to have a group of guys with some roots together, because we have a collective institutional memory of, 'OK, this is what we've done, but that doesn't fit us any more, this fits us.'
"It was not easy. We had to strip a lot of things down, we threw a lot of things out. It was mostly subtraction. But our experience together made that process go really well."
Tavita Pritchard, the Andrew Luck Director of Offense, said the changes make Stanford more efficient.
"The playbook has shrunk to a certain degree," Pritchard said "But it's also about what we're asking guys to do within a play, the adjustments. We're trying to have guys play faster, have fewer things to think about. We're really trying to get rid of conflict in guys' brains. Just trying to eliminate clutter in their heads.
"We've always been known as a complex offense. I still don't think we're not complex, but we could stand to be as simple as we can be."

Wow that is some serious spin. If you don't have quality coaches in the room (and Shaw doesn't), all he's doing is shuffling deck chairs.

Let’s assume the naysayers are right that Shaw has mediocre assistants. What’s the alternative? Look at the headwinds Stanford is facing with its poor recent record, NIL disadvantages, and conference realignment. What makes you think Shaw could reasonably expect to hire a higher quality coach as a replacement?

I understand where you're coming from - the headwinds have picked up - but I disagree. It's a failure of imagination to think that Stanford could not hire good assistant coaches if that truly were the goal. In 2006, the program was in shambles, and it wasn't clear that Stanford would ever compete again. We hired an up-and-coming coach from an FCS program. At present, we're only talking about coordinators and assistants, not even a head coach.
It's definitely harder to draw big-name coaches to Stanford now compared to a few years ago, but David Shaw
is a big-name coach and he's compensated as such. It's his job to attract and lead a high-quality staff. In fact, this is probably the most important part of his job. He just preferred to stick with the current staff. Let's see how it goes...

What is the alternative? Are you kidding?
The alternative is firing the head coach if this season is anything like last season.
Coachspeak.

The criticism was for Shaw’s speech when he gave supposed reasons for bringing his staff back. Can’t blame Shaw for not firing himself.

Institution memory is more important than coaching ability? Stanford is doomed.
