OT: U$C Allegedly Corrupt Again - TrumpCard - 09-07-2022

“Prosecutors say the L.A. mayoral candidate’s scholarship and her dealings with USC are ‘critical’ to a case about corruption at the university.”  The investigation relates to the bribery charge against Mark Ridley-Thomas, but the connection is unclear.

The main issue was brought up here by Trumpcard about a year ago.  (My reply was a couple of posts after it)

It had an impact on the Los Angeles mayor’s race then and now it is possible that it will again this year.

It is almost as if an environment that seems to be sustained at USC winds up spreading to the city.

Also, “again” implies there might have been a corruption-free period in between prior episodes of corruption and this one.  But I ask, when was the last time USC wasn’t corrupt?

It was brief, like that really nice weather in Detroit.  One week in the spring and one week in the fall.  Otherwise, corruption and misery.

Those who haven't should take a look at Paul Pringle's book Bad City, which just came out.

It's a pretty good look at the recent scandals that seem to have sprouted like weeds at USC.  The first one was Puliafito, the Dean of Medicine who was actively using and supplying drugs before he was quietly eased out the back door.  That overlapped with Tyndall, the gynecologist who's cost the university more than $1.1B in settlements so far.  Finally, there's Varsity Blues, which affected a number of schools (including Stanford), but mostly of course USC.

Pringle also talks about the cozy relationship between the LA Times (his newspaper) and USC, which are both major institutions in the LA Area.  As newspapers like the Times have been weakened, their ability to conduct investigative reporting has been reduced, which affects all of us.

(Speaking of Varsity Blues, John Vandemoer's book Rigged Justice is a good account of the Varsity Blues situation from his viewpoint as a Stanford coach.)

I read Pringle's book and I was somewhat surprised that I was not surprised by any of those shenanigans, if that makes sense.  He did a good job of exposing the malfeasance by his own editors at LAT.

Speaking of Varsity Blues and USC, their former water polo coach was granted a new trial yesterday after a federal jduge found that the school could not be considered a victim while also receiving the alleged bribe money. 

Judge Talwani, in her 60 page order wrote "However distasteful, there is nothing inherently illegal about a private institution accepting money in exchange for a student's admission. The resulting prejudice, where the jury may have found a bribe or kickback based not on the tuition payments for Vavic's children but on the funds paid to the USC Water Polo gift account that the government concedes were not misused, warrants a new trial."

Oh. Let the bidding begin.

People have been able to buy their kids' way into fancy private schools for as long as private schools have been around.  That includes Stanford.  It's just a matter of price.  The Varsity Blues scandal revealed that the price at U$C is lower than previously understood for people who were willing to be shady about it.  I'm guessing U$C will establish stronger internal rules and procedures to make sure that the school capitalizes on the full value of admissions-for-sale going forward, and that people won't be able to buy their way into the school with smaller donations to parochial department funds as much anymore.

First time I read that, I thought "how cynical." Second time, I thought "how true."

My sons and I went through the admissions wars in 2009 and 2013. When other parents asked me if there were any sure-fire ways to get their child admitted to a very selective college, I told them that I only knew of two. If their child started and ran a substantial business that generated strong revenue, that was one. I only knew three students who went that route, but all of them were admitted to prestigious universities. The other, not-quite-Rick-Singer method was to find someone on campus who absolutely needed you to the point that they would make a formal request to admissions to get you in the door. Worked about a dozen times, didn't work once, of the situations with which I'm familiar.
