He's out the whole year now.

What's the injury? What a bummer for the kid. . . .

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - CompSci87 - 09-27-2022

I moved a couple of posts here from the original "EJ Smith out" thread (now titled "...for Washington"). It seemed confusing when that thread got retitled "... for the year" but the news that it was for the year didn't come until way into page 2.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - Treebound - 09-27-2022

I'm very sorry to hear this and good luck to EJ on a full recovery.

I may have missed this in the offseason, but was there any feedback/comment coming from Austin Jones or Peat regarding their reasons for leaving the program?   Did either actually graduate?    I'm guessing that Shaw made no comment on their departures as well...

Yeah, I'm curious if insiders have a sense of the expected depth chart, positions 1-4 at tailback this year, assuming we still had Jones and Peat.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - Langdude - 09-27-2022

Personally, imagining Shaw, I would guess the depth chart would have been Jones, Peat, Smith, Filkins, respectively.

FWIW, I was encouraged by Filkins' production against UW, tipped pass aside.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - Phogge - 09-27-2022

What's the over/under on Filkins playing the entire season?

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - bl82 - 09-27-2022

I don't know how durable Filkins turns out to be, but he has impressed the hell out of me so far. Powerful, elusive, quick enough and a definite receiving threat.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - chrisk - 09-27-2022

Smith’s “injury concerns” sound like he should not have reentered the USC game.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - winflop - 09-27-2022

Oh man, what a bummer for him. I hope he makes a complete recovery and look forward to seeing him next year.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - newguy - 09-27-2022

any possibility that Arlen Harris will see playing time?

Do you know something, or is that pure conjecture?

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - Phogge - 09-27-2022

Dollars to donuts Smith will be in another uni next year.

Not a doughnut eater but I'd say that's a safe bet. I can't envision dad encouraging his son to endure the duration when so many veins of ore are out there today.

RE: EJ Smith out for the year - Row80Critic - 09-27-2022

In the clip I saw, Shaw said it is 'injury related' which seems like a curious way to say an injury is preventing him from playing.  I could be wrong, but when other players have season-ending injuries, Shaw hasn't tried to hide the ball like this -- because there is no benefit in keeping other coaches guessing after you say the guy is out for the year.  I'd say there is more to the story we may hear about in due course.

That would have been my guess on order before the transfer news, and agree regarding Filkin's against UW.

In spite of all our other troubles, our run game seems significantly better this year.

It looked like he was protecting himself by running out of bounds in the SC game. Leads me to believe he doesn't want to aggravate a sore spot. Lends support for the view he won't be here next year. Hope that's not how it works out.

From his dad's demeanor at his announcing ceremony it didn't look like his dad encouraged him to go to Stanford in the first place.
Given that, I'm not sure what his dad wants will be a big factor in his decision to stay or go.
Having said that, his decision to sit out the rest of the year would be consistent with a feeling he wants to save his body for another season that will be more successful than he anticipates this one being. That very well could be playing for another team.
