Shaw on the hot seat? - winflop - 09-29-2022

Nothing we don't already know, but the article puts it all in one place in a somewhat strong indictment.

This phrase is instructive, especially the first five words:  "...he was an instant success after taking over for Jim Harbaugh, leading the program to three conference titles, four New Year's Six bowl games, and two Rose Bowls wins."

He hit his heights in first five years of his inheritance. Downhill from then on. He basically circled the wagons after that. Now he's in the bunker.

Losses in 9 of the last 10 games.  Outscored in those losses, 336 to 150.  Can't crow too much about our win over Colgate--they are 1-3.  Shaw and his staff deserve to be on a hot seat.

There are others on this board who understand the innerworkings of Stanford better than me, but I feel fairly confident that I understand them better than some writer from DraftKings or Fan Nation. I would be shocked if there is any serious internal momentum towards firing Shaw. I sense it would take several more years of abject futility before it was even a remote possibility.

I have virtually no insight or understanding of the innerworkings of Stanford. However, I am willing to bet that Shaw himself has no stomach for 2 and 3 win seasons. I obviously don't know what his threshold is, but IMHO he is approaching it. If the OL doesn't improve after him going through several OL coaches, I expect him to decide "it can be done" and resign. Maybe at the end of this year and certainly at the end of next year if things get no better. He is a proud man and losing is eroding his "legacy". He doesn't need the money. Just my opinion.

Solid post, Goose.

I’m curious what you’ve seen that indicates Shaw is close to reaching his breaking point? He kicked it into cruise control years ago (long before NIL and the transfer portal). You can see it from our effort on the recruiting trail. He’s going to cash those $9 million checks as long as he can. Throw in the fact that he’s incredibly stubborn and I don’t see him admitting that things have reached the point of no return. Complacency and stubbornness are a lethal combination.

I guess I'm guilty of expecting a professional journalist and national publication to produce something with a little more beef to it.  6 short paragraphs and a quotation from DraftKings?  Really?  SI quoting Draftkings?

Enough about the $9M paychecks that's completely inaccurate. As for him admitting things, he's not going to do that publicly. He's not stupid, and he does have pride. I hope he does resign after this season, but I think the chances of that happening are even lower than Muir growing a spine and firing him.

My guess is he has this season and next to try to turn things around. Two more 3-9, 4-8 type seasons and Stanford has got to bring in someone new. Who knows what is actually going to happen though.

If 2-10 or something close happens how many people will really care if the administration doesn’t. Never thought I would get to that point after 66 years but nothing is forever except diamonds.

RE: Shaw on the hot seat? - BostonCard - 09-30-2022

How much of the “maybe Shaw will resign crowd” have seen or heard evidence for it and how many are wishcasting?

And not even diamonds are forever.  The Bond song got that wrong.

RE: Shaw on the hot seat? - gailtate - 10-01-2022

It will happen via back-channels involving the board of governors (athletics control) spearheaded by whoever it is today wrapped in the Tom Ford/John Arrillaga mantle. Tad Taube, maybe? But I cannot believe all is well and there is no whispered discontent right now and that nothing is afoot. If it isn't, then rot and dysfunction is underway and the End Is At Hand at Stanford As We Have Known It.

RE: Shaw on the hot seat? - lex24 - 10-01-2022

Let’s assume Shaw is out.  Who replaces him?  It’s not a particularly attractive job. Particularly with no Admin support. They won’t get a rising stat coordinator.  Too high a failure potential.  My guess is they would be looking at an FCS guy.  Worked last time…..

Unless and until they have Admin support, they will fail. With or without Shaw.

Serious question. What support is needed that is not present? I would guess that what the Athletic Department gets now is benign neglect. While not sexy, the freedom that delivers could be regarded as a "good thing". I agree there are lots of reasons coaches won't want to take a Stanford job, and there are more every day as the devolution of college athletics continues. What can the administration provide to help?

It’s one of the 40 most attractive jobs in college football. At most pessimistic top 65. There are some Power Five coaches who would take it, almost every Group of Five or FCS head coach, and all but the 5-10 hottest coordinators. There’d be plenty of a pool. At Shaw’s salary we could easily get a star.

Bryan Harsin, Lance Leipold, Chris Klieman, Troy Taylor, Brent Brennan - all likely in our ballpark, but certainly a majority of them would be. Just by way of example.

Brennan, a UCLA alum, is a definite maybe, Taylor, I don't know. He's worshipped at SacState, yes. But the Stanford gig would provide both these guys with a chance to show their stuff to the FBS world in an attractively low-pressure environment. Quality guys.

He wasn't worshiped at Utah when he was OC for a year.

19-5 since arrival at SacState, reg. season. 0-2 post-season. Beat Colorado St. last week, 41-10. Now 3-0. Playing Cal Poly later today.
