I don't understand why anyone would play for her.

Pretty sure that is behind a paywall, but if you have an SF Chron sub, it's a heart-breaking read that is worth your time.

People play for her because kids don’t have the history behind the coach. They also have the mentality of, ‘That would never happen to me.’ 

Some people say she doesn’t owe anyone an explanation, which is true to a certain extent. However, as a public figure, she st least needs to play the game. And how hard is it to say a quick line of, ‘I hope she gets home safely.’ The fact that she won’t says more about her than anything else. 

She sells a family-friendly environment… and kids and parents fall for it every time.
