in my time on the Farm, i knew a fencer named Craig Miott (sabre, class of '85) who turned down all 3 service academies to attend Stanford. he was one smart son-of-a-gun.
awhile ago there was talk of the Olympics getting rid of fencing because it wasn't "tv-friendly" like synchronized swimming......but fortunately, they've kept it.

Attending the Renaissance Faire on back to back years at the Cow Palace, my daughter tried out the fencing booth and loved it. She seemed to be pretty good, too, for a beginner. The instructor enthusiastically gave us his card and recommended a club in Oakland. We gave it a shot and after a couple of weeks, the coach at the club demanded she spend 100% of her time on fencing or she couldn't participate. I think my daughter was 10 or 11 at the time. So much for fencing for her. . . .
