That's good news.

Teams down in Stanford's territory in the standings either get that early afternoon Pac-12 Nets time slot or end up in that 8PM Pac-12 Nets after dark slot.   So given those options I am thrilled to learn the game is set for 12:30.

I expect loads of complaints on this board that it is too early or too something, but I would rather get the 12:30 slot on Pac-12 Nets than any of the 7:30PM or 8PM options.   I would guess the athletes prefer it too as getting back to the dorms before 8PM should allow them to get more of Sunday to allocate to the student part of student-athlete.

Me too, especially this time of year. 1230 in the fall is just about perfect weather wise, unless it rains, then start time doesn't much matter. It won't be the wok, and the game will end before it gets dark. What's not to like?

We didn't renew this year because of covid and a couple other things, but we just received an email advising we can pick our seats for next year and sit in them free for this years' last two games. Giving away good seats??? Attraction insufficient??? Whew!! Well, hey, maybe it works.

Attendance is now much worse for day games. People are doing other things during the day. I go one way or another, but the stands have more people at night.

Even in other conferences if you look in the upper decks of the mid-tier teams you will see that those Noon and 1PM EDT kicks have empty seats even in VA, PA, NC, etc.  

The daytime trend is not as significant as the west coast apathy for spectator sports (see A's, Lakers, Chargers, Pac-12, and more) but it is something you can observe in other conferences.

I don't think Stanford would get a lot of walk up ticket revenue even if the kick was at 5 or 6PM, so happy to have the game time that works best for the players.  And I think for a home game the 12:30PM start time works well for the Stanford student athletes, and I am confident their friends and family not in the stands have access to the Pac-12 Nets.

Football is the culture in those places, far from it in the Bay Area.

I think you are correct, and I would be interested in why that might be the case.

My personal bias is that it isn't so much the time of day that matters, but rather the predictability that is the problem. When I was a student, there was a lot of socializing scheduled around the game. You knew when the game would be and you therefore knew the other social events, like parties, would happen later in the day. You could reliably know how to fit the various activities together. Now with the start times that are all over the map, many people (IMHO) just say "To heck with it, let's schedule the events we can control and the game happens when it happens". This produces conflicts so that people that aren't rabid fans don't/can't go. Many families with children under 14 or so have events that happen during the day that can't easily be moved. If they knew they could rely on a particular start time for Stanford football, they could put pressure on the other events to move earlier in the day, but if there is no certainty, it is hard to argue that people should get up earlier. Probably 75% of the time there would be no reason to do so. Late starts can still be accommodated in many cases, and that's why we get more fans to night games.

I know that with the TV money this random start time won't change, but IMHO that random start time is greatly accelerating the already extant loss of interest in attending college football games. Attendance would be going down anyway as football (at least on the "west coast") just doesn't have the interest it once did. It doesn't take much for people who aren't all that interested anyway to decide it is just too hard to attend. Add to that the relatively high cost of attending the games, especially if travel is involved, and people simply won't go.

Hit the nail on the head for us.  We used to purchase plane tickets and make travel plans well in advance, taking advantage of discounts for early booking.  It's $1400-$1500 for us to attend a game.  We won't be attending any games this year.  10 years ago we made every home game and I would occasionally catch an away game.   My granddaughters turn nasty after their usual 9:00 bedtime, so the 8 PM start doesn't work for them.

I'm still very interested in Stanford football, but I am at the point I will save the ticket and travel money and watch from home.
