SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - cctop - 10-25-2022

I was a little surprised to see that the SF Chronicle's Sunday print edition didn't include a story on the Cal or Stanford football games.

I was even more surprised that there's no story on the Stanford-ASU game online at sfchronicle.com.  A staff reporter did write about the Cal game, though.

On sfgate.com (a site owned by the same company as the SF Chronicle but editorially separate) there is at least the AP news story on the Stanford game.

For today, there is coverage online of the Pac-12 women's basketball media day and the news of Casey Filkin's injury, but neither story made the print edition.

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - Phogge - 10-25-2022

There is a ton more HS football coverage than Stanford coverage in the Chron.

The Sunday sports is as useful as as **** on a bull. It is more like a rotogravure with no reporting of scores, stats etc.

Stanford is college football’s answer to the NFL’s Mr. Irrelevant.

Takeaway: the battered and bruised business model for print journalism is such that publishers are doing their damndest to ween the fogies off print and onto digital. I don't like it either, but I do understand the imperative to make money. They'll inevitably get their way, when the die-hard fogies get to that big news-stand in the sky.

I think the Sunday sports page is done on Saturday.

Fixed it for you. . ..

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - chrisk - 10-25-2022

The Chronicle used to print an edition after West Coast games were completed.
Now the final edition goes to bed in the early evening most days and even earlier
on Saturday.

The cutoff for weather temperatures is now 5pm, except for Sunday paper, which is 11am Saturday.

The Chronicle has a new reporter named Marisa Ingemi who covers women's athletes. She has
written many articles on Stanford women athletes.

Twenty years ago, the Chronicle print circulation was well over 400,000.
Today, it is about 60,000 and a subscription costs a fortune.

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - Phogge - 10-26-2022

I have a digital sub to the Chron. Comes with a Sunday only print version. Everything in it is lite. The only substance is Carl Notle and the Irish Times.

Gave me a nice Wednesday afternoon chuckle!

I have digital subscription.  I like a newspaper.  But the cost of getting Chron delivered is outrageous.  I do get Sunday Merc delivered

Same here.

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - CompSci87 - 10-26-2022

I'm still getting the paper Merc daily, but by the time it comes I've often already read their sports stories online.

Nonetheless, I'm old fogey enough at 63 to want to keep my familiar old morning paper habit.

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - Phogge - 10-26-2022

Bliss was up to see the dawn break with the coffee on and Caen, Delaplane, the Fearless Spectator, Paine Knickerbocker and John Wasserman waiting to be read. Toss in a David Pearlman piece every now and then.

Maybe its GOOD they aren't covering Stanford football the last few years...

Ron Fimrite and Art Rosenbaum defined Bay Area sports coverage, especially college. Still have a clipping of the '71 Rose Bowl story under Rosenbaum's by-line. And I grew up reading Bob Stevens' baseball stories. On other pages I chuckled at Art Hoppe's satire and Charles McCabe's sour-ass commentaries. And a lot of people still don't know that Glenn Dickey openly campaigned for Stanford to hire Bill Walsh after Jack Christiansen was let go. Good paper, good years.

“Plunkett Keeps His Promise”. Sunday headline after they beat SC. Back in the day, the Chron and Examiner put out a joint Sunday paper.

One guy I haven’t seen mentioned is Art Spander.

Dickey also campaigned for Cal to hire Joe Kapp.  Based on both recommendations, I think Dickey (a Cal grad) was a closet Stanford fan.

I was a Spander fan. (A "fander span"?)

RE: SF Chronicle's (lack of) coverage of Stanford football - Phogge - 10-27-2022

Spander had a blog. Mostly local stuff but tons of golf. He was having vision problems so I don't know if he's still writing.

Used to chat with him at the Niners press lunch. He had an incredible streak of Rose Bowl attendance and was voted into the RB HOF. Last saw him in '19. UCLA grad, still had his wits.

Update: Still has an online column and Wiki says he is a contributor to The Athletic. Hope he can still make Augusta.

I really hate to see the old boys fading away, but, ask not for whom the bell tolls, right?

I just got off the weekly NFL Films Zoom. There are a couple of new cameramen who are young enough to be my grandsons.
