We got one vote in the media poll? How?
Be that as it may, we are picked to finish fifth this year. Hard to see us breaking through because this staff has yet to show that it can make the whole be more than the sum of its parts, but with Ingram, we do have some good parts. Hope this is the year we finally break through.

Must have been Hasse's brother-in-law. Good to see that we are expected to place in the upper half. That is progress of a kind, even if it's just a media poll....

I figured it's that well-known hometown shill, Grant Cohn.

Fifth isn't likely to get a ticket punched, I just hope Haase can get the whole to
equal the sum of the parts, something he has yet to do. Exceeding it might be too much to ask.

Normally I'd shrug, but I do think it's deserving based on personnel only (rather than, say, coaching). Unlike past years, the NBA-scouted player stayed on for another season and a pretty decent incoming transfer has been added to the shuffle. I think the depth, experience, and talent among the players is there -- and the more expectations are placed on this coach, the more likely he'll be let go if he doesn't realize them. Like you, I'm hoping it all comes together this season.

Question: What has to happen for Stanford to exceed expectations. Who needs to step up?

The obvious answer is "everyone," but aside from supporting cast, Ingram has to re-establish that he is "THE GUY."
Ingram's stats in our final 10 conference games (last 8 regular season + 2 Pac-12 tourney games):
- 33.3 mpg
- 38.2% 2pt / 32.3% 3pt / 40% FT (yikes!)
- 9.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 4.0 apg
- 3.0 TOpg (yikes!)
- Stanford record: 2-8
Do these stats scream "Pac-12 freshman of the year" or "THE GUY" to anyone here? They certainly don't to me. He didn't even average double-digit points, couldn't shoot the ball very well especially at the line, and led the team in TOs (though on a per-minute basis Silva was right there with him). He continued to be a good facilitator and rebounder overall, though. A great glue guy, but not THE GUY when we needed him to be.
In fact, Wazzu's Mouhamed Gueye won Pac-12 frosh of the week THREE TIMES to Ingram's one in this time period. Gueye was THE GUY down the stretch, while Ingram played his way out of the NBA draft buzz he (rightly) earned during the first half of the season.
More generally, too many times down that stretch it felt like the entire team was passing it around and hoping someone else would make a play. (Too often that "play" would be Delaire deciding to go iso and throwing something up wildly or turning it over.)

That sentence brings back many bad memories of last season.

Great question!
- Team not to collapse towards the end of the season.
- All conference Spencer. He showed in that the last few games signs that he was putting it altogether, becoming much more than a pure shooter and the true veteran leader. That needs to carry through
- Angel drawing DaSilva comparisons
- One of O'Connor or Isa Silva showing they can be competent point guards and occasional scoring threats. If they're looking to carry the team through scoring we're in trouble. Tyger Campbell should be the model to emulate.
- Ingram was plenty good last year. No massive leap required, only continued progress.
- One or two of the new additions stepping up and being part of the conversation.

3 things - make shots, make shots, make shots. And reduce turnovers substantially.
Results measures - beat Arizona (2-23 since 2009), beat UCLA at Pauley (1-14 at Pauley since 2005), win more games than lose in the P12 tournament (something Stanford has not done since the 2013-2014 season, the last time they played in the NCAA tournament)

Make the Dance this year - no excuses (injuries, Covid, whatever). If No Dance, then Haase is gone. The "wait until next year" schtick is beyond old. We need Maples to rock again as it did in the Monty days. Bring it!

Good player in his day. But I think he’s lost a couple steps. And his eligibility is up…..

All true, but you didn't ask "which player(s) need to step up?" and Haase is the only one whose job is on the line so I'd say he's the one who needs to step up the most.
