Quote:Sad news today. Dante Dettamonti, the Stanford water polo coach from 1977-2001, was killed yesterday while riding his bike in Woodside. He won 8 national Championships in 25 years, winning a championship in 4 different decades, the only NCAA water polo coach to do this. He remained active in the water polo community after his retirement, providing his knowledge and coaching skills to everyone from Masters teams to a stint as coach at Menlo Atherton HS. He placed 6th in the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon in 1981. He is a much beloved fixture in the Water Polo community and this is a great loss.

Sad indeed. Saw it all over the water polo sites. Somehow I missed that he was killed while biking. Sad and tragic.

One of the most cooperative coaches on staff when I was producing films for Cavalli, Rose and Geiger. Not so much Dr. Tom and President Kennedy.

I got to know Dante’ when I was working in the AD. He was always super nice to me and very personable. Very sad to read about his accident. Travel well Dante’.

I knew him because of his wine. Back in the day he made a great Cabernet that was sold at what is now Parkside Grill. Actually met him at the bar there years ago. It was a while before I learned he coached water polo at Stanford. This was in about 2003 or so, not long after he retired from coaching at Stanford.
