Jon Volpe - Quite a Story - Genuine Realist - 11-08-2022

Back in 1988, I never missed a home game. It was the year of Jon Volpe, with my dad complaining that Volpe was overused, and me pointing out that the was the only productive offensive weapon that Stanford had. Whatever the reason, Jack Elway called his number every other play. Since Volpe, like Dumbo, was not made of rubber, he did get dinged up and his last two seasons were not nearly as productive.

I knew nothing about him, then came across this profile (in the Tucson Weekly, back in 2004). Volpe's story is quite a story, amazing really. It would be enough to survive. To matriculate at Stanford, graduate, become a football star and a Rhodes Scholar candidate, go on to business success . . .it truly is astonishing.

Jon may be a lurker here. If so, congratulations. We hardly knew ye. Best of luck.

Looks like he is still in Tucson and still running Nova Home Loans. He has moved out of day to day management and is now Chairman of the Board.

Loved watching Volpe run.

I remember the student section chanting, "Volpe up the middle!" every time he touched the ball.  It seemed like the team's only play.

I also remember some commentator referring to him as the human bowling ball.

Apologies to all, thought I'd provided the link.
