WBB: Stanford 98 -- Pacific 44 -
81alum - 11-10-2022
Preview:
Stanford travels to Pacific--a fairly regular event in recent preseasons. Last year we beat them at Maples 91-62, the previous year we beat them in Stockton 104-61 in a nationally televised game celebrating Tara passing Pat Summit for the most WBB wins in history.
Pacific was not a good team last year, going 6-23. They do return their best players. Anaya James led them in scoring as a freshman, both for the season and in their game against us. She is a 5'9" guard averaging about 14 ppg and last year was mainly a slasher, but in her first game this year she also had 3/4 treys. Liz Smith is their second leading scorer, another 5'9" guard. They also have a sharpshooting senior from Australia, Sam Ashby, who made 40 three pointers last year, but they don't have anyone like CSUNs 49% three point shooter who we shut down last night.
Pacific does not have the height of a typical Pac 12 team, but they probably are a little better off than our previous opponents. One starter is 6-2, Cecelia Holmberg from Sweden, and she leads the team in rebounding. Elizabeth Elliot is 6-1 and strong, has won a number of conference awards. They will probably be at least a bit more challenging in the post than SDSU or CSUN--but just a bit.
Pacific is coming off a big win against UC Riverside, 83-61, which will certainly lift their spirits after last year's down year. James led them with 21 points.

My wife and I will be there. It will be interesting to see how our freshmen perform in their first road game.

Cheer for me. I hate these 6 p.m. games!

I think the most interesting thing about this game is watching who defends James, and how. James is a highly talented, short, speedy guard--exactly the kind we have worried about. Who gets the assignment, do we switch on her, etc.?

I’ll be at a party but I’m going to try to capture the livestream remotely on my computer, and if it works I’ll upload it afterward (no guarantees, I’ve never tried it before).

Here is an interview with UOP's Sam Ashby, one of their good three point shooters, a senior Aussie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdhHGqUYds4
"I am really looking forward to our first home game against Stanford. I know we will have a h uge crowd and I'm looking forward to playing against some of the best." In general, she is refreshingly brief with her answers.
Another interesting factoid: The UOP head coach, Bradley Davis, was a long time assistant at UOP to Lynne Roberts when she was there, and took over when Roberts left to go to Utah in 2015.

Tara in the pre-game interview, 2 points:
1. "Move the ball and go inside" on offense.
2. Guarding Anaya James with be Emma-Nnopu, Lepolu, Nivar, Harriel. Tara emphasized the need to control James, so this is a key to the game and might go a long ways to helping sort out who our best defender is for guarding these sorts of short, quick guards.
The game seems not be ready to start at 6:00. National anthem has not happened yet, so at least another 10 minutes.

Let's see some pretty basketball tonight. Low turnovers, lots of assists, dominance in the paint, and threes raining.
My stream is sketchy.
Jones kicks it off with a turnover.
Agnes follows it up with another turnover.
Well, not the beautiful basketball I was hoping for in the first 4:05.

I'm watching the video stream but listening to the Stanford audio with Kevin Danna.
Kevin raved about Lepolo's assist, but the video missed it entirely to show a replay of UoP's last basket.
Video is terrible. Pauses and skips a lot.

Is there an audio stream for Kevin Danna?

Not to mention the slo-mo reply of every made UOP bucket, missing the action on the other end. Argh.

Anyone see the live stats? Seems like we are getting outrebounded badly.
I think this is one of those nights where the shots don't fall. Need to win this one in the paint.

Yes, lots of Pacific replays blotting out the game action. But we are not exactly playing well in the 1st quarter. Jones keeps turning it over and everyone not named Kiki is missing.

Yeah, at least it keeps me from seeing the misses. But I sure see all of UOP's o-boards. What the heck?

Emma Nnopu seems lost on offense. Brink taking too many 3’s

I was pleased to see that Stanford upped their game on live streams this year. It's now separate from the scoreboard feed and doesn't show replays while live action is going on. Yay! Too bad UoP isn't there yet.

That's more like it. A 23-4 run. Lepolo looks good.
