WBB: South Carolina [merged thread] - 81alum - 11-10-2022
[South Carolina vs. Maryland] will be an interesting game to watch just before our own game at Pacific. The game is on ESPN2.
South Carolina has changed in some ways since we played them a year ago, and it could be insightful to watch them a couple of weeks before we play them this year.
SC lost Destanni Henderson, who hurt us badly last year. 6'3" freshman Ashley Watkins seems to be their biggest addition to the team. Here is who they started in their first game:

Dawn Staley point out that they have a problem with inexperience at point guard! She also discusses scheduling a tough challenge early in the season. She describes Maryland as playing 5-out, being impatient, and taking a lot of 3s. All their players will shoot, and Maryland presses.

At the half it is South Carolina 32, Maryland 26. Boston 4/4 but Zia Cooke only 2/10, reflecting Maryland's inability to defend Boston. I am really impressed with Maryland's grad-transfer from Princeton Abbie Meyers, who has 18 points against South Carolina in the half. The Ivies do not allow grad students to play, so she had to leave Princeton to continue her eligibility. But whatever she is doing is the secret sauce that we want our wings to do.
I wonder if Betts could defend Boston? South Carolina does not start as much height as I expected:
Boston 6'5"
Saxton 6'2"
Johnson 5'8"
Beal 6'1"
Cooke 5'9"
Cooke will be the toughest perimeter matchup. South Carolina was not a great three point shooting team last year, though, so it remains to be seen if they become a bigger threat from distance. In the first half they were 4/15 from distance.
I am not sure if Iriafen can guard Boston, hence my wonderment about Betts or maybe even Prechtel. We should look at last year's game and see what Tara did. As for Cooke--whoever our best perimeter defender is. I think Brink could handle Saxton or Beal easily. Jones could handle Beal quite easily.
I wonder if South Carolina would play zone against us to stop Brink and Iriafen from getting inside. If so, our jump shooting will need to be sharp. That is clearly Maryland's strategy, with mixed success so far. But clearly a defense that takes out Boston and makes them hit jump shots is the obvious one. And whatever can be done to limit O-boards for South Carolina should be done--a zone would not be good at that. South Carolina already has 11 for the half. Boston is just the great eraser who turns everyone else's missed shots into points, even if Maryland prevents South Carolina from passing the ball in to her.

Maryland fell apart in the second half. Lobo observed that Stanford was one of the few teams that could match up with South Carolina, said something like "They have enough big bodies to clog the paint against Boston, and they have the ability to hit threes. But last year they had problems with the South Carolina pressure."
I think she is right. On defense we need to control Boston which probably means a double team of two bigs on her. We will wind up giving up some perimeter jumpers, but that is the poison we need to pick. Put Emma-Nnopu on Cooke (or whoever can guard her) and force others to do the scoring for South Carolina.
On offense I like our chances. Jump will be closely guarded and so it will become a 4 on 4. Boston can probably control Iriafen or whoever we play at the 5, but I'm not sure who can really defend Jones, and Brink can probably get by Saxton. We can score points on them. The key will be limiting their offensive rebounds and limiting our turnovers.
For those who are skeptical of Jones at point--take a look at Amihere for South Carolina. She doesn't start, but a 6'4" point-forward who runs like a gazelle is a match-up nightmare. We need to be prepared for that too. Brink, probably.
We simply need to play our first half from last year against them--for two halves--in the friendlier confines of Maples. But the national media is really building up this game.

I'm not sure Betts is ready to guard Boston this year. I think Betts needs to bake in the oven for one more year before a finished product. Next year she should be able to hold her own against any post player.
I like Stanford's speed getting down the court to cause problems on offense.

won't be able to guard BOSTON. BRINK's slight frame will be bullied by BOSTON.
The best bet is PRETCHTEL (same height and bulk) but if she has
a hard time, then Tara has no choice but to play BETTS vs BOSTON.
BETTS is 2 inches taller, has a longer wingspan and is pretty smart
with guarding without fouling.

Last year Boston was not the main problem. We held her to 8/20, which I think is a respectable result against an elite talent like her. Brink did get into foul trouble trying to guard her, and Prechtel did better.
But we can't learn that much from last year's game. Lexie had an amazing first half and went silent in the second half, but was our leading scorer. (Like everyone, I loved Lexie, but she could be very streaky, as the two halves showed.) She is gone. Henderson was silent in the first half but went off in the second half for South Carolina and got them the win. She is gone.
This year we have some question marks. We know we can defend Boston--at least to a degree. But who will defend Zia Cooke? I think we are stuck, a bit, since neither Jump nor Jones is really the right kind of defender for Cooke. Jump will probably get first crack at it, but it might well be that Cooke scores more than Boston in this game.
I do think that Iriafen will get a shot at defending Boston. Iriafen has good technique and a long reach. Tara may also rotate a double to front Boston, so that might help. Last year Prechtel actually blocked Boston once, so there is that. I think we can certainly rotate Betts into the lineup early and see if she can hold up. Between Iriafen, Prechtel, and Betts we would have a lot of fouls to give. But I think we need to keep Brink from trying to defend Boston.

Unless Fran cannot go or is too limited by her hand, I would expect that she will be afforded the opportunity to defend Boston. The questions that I have who will Boston have to defend? And if fatigue will be factor in the battle of front lines of both teams.

Perhaps SC willhave the same issue we had last year after losing Kianna; still a great team, but missing the little extra at PG in order to win it all.
We shouldn't worry at all about guarding Boston. We have 5 post players who would start on virtually every other team - use them! Recall the Wake Forest MBB game when we blanketed an mauled Tim Duncan because we had so many fouls to give with tremenous big depth?

Well . . . I don't think that should be your strategy against SCar. We have a bit more than "some" depth. Our two teams are the deepest at Post and forward of any teams in the nation.
Our returning front court is Boston at post and Saxton at SF. Returning starter at wing is Beal, the defensive specialist who can guard a forward or a guard. So, no change.
Cardosa can come in at either post or strong forward. 6-4 RS Junior, Latecia Amihere, is also available to play any position from point guard to post though she usually backs up Beal at SF. Behind her are 6-4 sophomore Sania Feagan (#3 prospect in 2021 class) or 6-3 frosh Ashlyn Watkins (McDonalds AA slam dunk champ).
You aren't going to run our front court ragged. Basically, our two superb front courts should nullify each other.
You should be able to beat us at home with your guards. Cook is good at shooting guard, but Jones is better. Our PGs are our weakness. One is a transfer, the other a redshirt frosh. Both sat out last year with injuries and neither is 100% yet. Gigantic Amihere has the most experience of game time point guard in our system. Henderson's departure limits the ability to press you like we did last year.
I fully expect y'all to win on your home court with your advantage at guard. My only hope is that by season's end we can nullify your backcourt advantage.
I won't wish you luck, but let us all pray that it is an injury free contest. I'm certainly thrilled that our coaches and schools have committed to this series and hope it remains a part of our schedules for years to come. Also "certainly" I'm not going to wish you luck with JuJu.
Will your fanbase fill up the arena for this 1/2 matchup? Does it have a tradition of loudness?

I also agree with your assessment that both teams's uncertainties are our point guard play. What I think we at Stanford are discovering is that our point guard play this year is looking to be significantly better than last year, and since your team really took advantage of us on that score a year ago that could bode well for us. But you also have youngsters stepping up who may prove themselves in their first big game, so it is going to be a lot of fun to see the player development on both teams.
On depth in the paint, yes you are deep, but we are ridiculously deep to the point I am not sure whether can get all our talent into the game. Iriafen has blossomed compared to last year, we have the #1 recruit in 6'7" Betts, and they join Belibi and Prechtel and versatile Demetre at 6'3". And that is addition to that all-American named Brink. All that depth may or may not prove to be an advantage for us depending on how closely called the game is and how fast its pace. Probably none of these players are 1 vs. 1 up to Boston's caliber--but who is?--so I imagine Tara will try to figure out a way to use them in waves.
As for the atmosphere in Maples--South Carolina has been here before. Tara helped Dawn out when she was getting started with a couple of home and aways, so this is not the first time around. Maples seats about 7000 and I am not sure whether it will sell out or not. Stanford is actually a fairly small university in terms of undergraduate population and since our alums go worldwide it has a limited alumni base in driving distance. In past years we used to sell out for UConn and Tennessee, so we will see if South Carolina helps us get there again. As far as loudness--our fan base tends to be older, so probably a little less rowdy, but Maples is a big concrete box and is capable of being loud.
And finally, we also hope for an injury-free contest, and year. Injuries are the biggest blight on WBB--as UConn, Oregon, and Arizona can attest already this year. It would be perfect if South Carolina and Stanford stay healthy enough to play each other twice this year!
