WBB: 3 wins @ Rainbow Wahine Showdown - 81alum - 11-21-2022

As far as I can tell, there is none for our games against Florida Gulf Coast and Grambling State. Our final game against Hawaii is said to be on Spectrum Sports. However, I have no link for that and no information. The info on the GoStanford page is lacking. So we might be "looking at" three radio broadcasts at this link as our only connection:

Florida Gulf Coast 2pm Friday

Florida Gulf Coast is ranked 49 by Massey and will be the best team we have played so far outside of South Carolina. They are currently 4-0 with no major wins so far. They went to Hawaii this week for a different tournament--so after two weeks in Hawaii they will be acclimated to the time zone and adjusted to the arena.

We have played FGCU 3 times and defeated them three times. The first was back in 2013 during an early tournament game at Maples. The last time was at this same tournament in Hawaii exactly 4 years ago. No one who played in that game is still on our roster. In that game we won 88-65 in one of Nadia Fingall's best games. She had 24 points. Lexie was out with injury at that time, but Carrington and Williams had good games. FGCU aspires to be the best bombers in basketball, and in that game we held them to "only" 10 treys on a whopping 38 attempts. Perimeter defense means everything against this team.

Last year FGCU was 30-3, making the NCAAs and winning its first round before losing to Maryland in the 2nd. They defeated Michigan State and Virginia Tech, but otherwise played mid majors.

This year FGCU is averaging 12 made threes a game. Alyza Winston is hitting 44%, but they have 7 players shooting over 30%. If they play as they did last time, they often go 5-out, requiring teams to defend all five players on the perimeter, and that clears space for them to drive to the basket if the threes are too closely guarded. I can see why Tara wanted to play them--it will be an excellent test for our perimeter defense. Their top two scorers are 5'8" and 5'3", so this is a team that has figured out how to play to maximize its talents.

This is the marquee match-up of the tournament, and it is unforgivable that there is no coverage.

Grambling State 2pm Saturday

Grambling State is ranked 287 by Massey. CSUN is 306 by comparison. Grambling is an HBCU in Louisiana of around 5000 students. The WBB team went 14-17 last year and is 1-3 this year. They battled Arizona State earlier this year and lost 49-62. In that game they were 7/19 from three point range. Surprisingly, they significantly out rebounded ASU, so they must be scrappy and determined.

Grambling's top three scorers are all short guards, although they have several 6'0-6'2" players on the team.

Hawaii 4:30pm Sunday

Hawaii is ranked 233 by Massey. Hawaii is 0-4 this year, but was 20-10 last year. In fact, they won the Big West tournament and received the automatic qualifier to the NCAAs, so they count as an NCAA team. Sadly for them, they had the privilege of playing Baylor in the 1st round.

But this year has been a different story. Their record, though, has been a bit deceptive. They lost to Oregon State by 1 point, and Portland they lost to 54-70. Florida Gulf Coast beat them 45-65. Hawaii has been competitive in these games.

Hawaii is led by two sophomore guards each averaging double digits, and each shooting 30-40% of their treys. Their third starter is a 6'3" grad transfer who has played for Columbia--so they have a little height. They have been experimenting with their other two slots.

Against Oregon State, Hawaii was 12/32 treys, compared with OSU's 6/17, and this kept them in the game. Perimeter defense, anyone?

With all these short, speedy guards who can bomb away from distance and/or drive--on all three opposing teams--I think we may see a lot of Emma-Nnopu, Nivar, Harriel, and Bosgana and probably Papadaki and Green when well ahead, in addition to the starters.

Well, actually we won't "see" any of them apparently.

The U of Hawaii web site has a link to the Stanford/Hawaii game that goes to ESPN+. ESPN''s online schedule also says the game will be on ESPN+. For those who don't know already, ESPN+ is an extra cost monthly streaming service, not available through cable providers, only directly from ESPN.

(I also found the Stanford/Hawaii game Iisted on the Spectrum Sports schedule here: https://oc16.tv/schedules. But I don't think there will be any way for people who aren't subscribers to Charter Spectrum cable in SoCal or Hawaii to watch it on Spectrum Sports.)

There aren't TV links to the other Stanford games in the tournament on Hawaii's web site, and ESPN doesn't list them as on ESPN+, so looks like there still is no good news for those.

Tripod or monopod would help. They make little clamps to hold the phone. We use them all the time for our video shoots. Here’s one example

Per their schedule, ESPN+ is showing the FGC vs Hawaii game on Saturday and Stanford vs Hawaii on Sunday (4:30 pm, pst) -- but no other games that I can spot from the tournament, including none on Friday. Hope that changes! But at least we can watch one, if you have ESPN+

If anyone does, you may want to find a way to mute the audio so it doesn't get recorded or at least remove the audio before posting. You may not want to have to watch what you say.

Absolutely! I have considerable experience removing sound tracks from video. I’ll try to record the audio game call (if there is one). Splicing it onto the video and aligning the two is pretty easy. Let me be your video editor. Can’t beat the price, quality above average. ;)

Charlie Creme has FGCU as a 9 seed in his current Bracketology which is more or less the equivalent of playing Oregon (an 8 seed). FGCU is not a team to be taken lightly. Should be a good challenge for the Cardinal.

Agreed.

In some ways, it is harder than playing Oregon, since their style is so unorthodox. They may make it impossible for us to take full advantage of our bevy of bigs--since everyone we put on the floor has to be able to defend a small guard on the three point line without letting them get behind us. Basically, we have to design an entirely new defense for them. But they were clearly the draw--the reason for going. Tara has played them 3 times so she won't have to reinvent the wheel entirely--just teach the new wheel to our team that has never seen anything like it before.

Off the wall question. This tournament has low tv presence. I doubt they can get much revenue at the gate. How are the organizers making money?? (Sports economist mode kicks in.)

I have wondered about this same question with any number of these. Sometimes they don't make money. Remember the one in Vancouver that got cancelled until they scrambled to fine a gym in Victoria at the last minute? We played Vic Schaeffer's Mississippi State team, I think, the year before he abandoned them to move to Texas. But that one almost did not come off.

I suspect this one is done by U Hawaii, because travel costs are exorbitant for Hawaii athletics and they can use the lure of the islands to get more games at home. This is the second WBB tournament in 2 weeks for them, after all.

Others seem to be done by resorts and hotels to try to get tourists to come at slack times. For them, TV is a detriment.

But I'd love to hear from people who really know how all these weekend tournaments are financed.

I found an announcement of the tournament.
C and R blog on the games.
The box score for the tournament (with no TV (nor radio, IIRC)) shows an attendance of 100.

I personally get suspicious at the funding of such a tournament with no particular source of income. Even if the teams pay to play (plus their expenses), it can't be that profitable. I can imagine the hotel not charging for rooms and then writing the (inflated) cost of rooms as a write-off.

(Speaking of hotel room cost, I just stayed at a Days Inn in the Pasadena area, with rooms in the $130 range. But the price listed on the back of the door was $799. Rose Bowl price or way-beyond-even Rose Bowl price?)

My wife and I will be in Hawaii for the games as well. We are vets of the last Hawaii tourney when Anna Wilson suffered a pretty horrendous injury from getting decked by an over zealous opponent. She laid very still on the floor for over ten minutes and was hauled off to the hospital in an ambulance. It was toward the end of the game and the refs ended the game right there. So, holiday tournaments can also be pretty risky, taking an unexpected loss is not the worst thing that can happen.
In Victoria just before Covid closed down the country, our players ran into some pretty stiff opponents. Fingal got decked and limped off the court, only to come back and help win the game over Georgetown. Jump was just a freshman and saved us from certain defeat to Cal Baptist by raining threes from everywhere on the court. Still, Nadia edged her out for tourney MVP for her gutsy play.
These holiday tournaments can be great fun, if you can get out of the holiday family obligations.
And the Bahamas reminded us that the players can’t let up when playing an underdog — we came away with a defeat that year, which took an awful lot of Bahamian beer and Conch to erase.
