...player revolts at Stanford are rare but not unheard of. Don't be surprised...

I would be surprised. I don't think Shaw is nearly as unpopular with his players as he is on this board.
Of course, that's just a WAG too.

What he is at this moment is desperate. And the kids in his program know it. Whether they circle the wagons or go rogue is the question.

The transfer portal is sitting right there for players who want to leave.

For those who want to leave, yes.

I have heard the players love Shaw. It's possible they love him but don't want to stay on a sinking ship, but I think the notion of mass transfers is more a construct from frustrated fans than it is a reality for the players.

Could be, of course. Still, there's a difference between "mass transfers" and players clamoring for a regime change. I have no conclusive evidence of latter but I know the smell of smoke (pls., no cannabis jokes).

Have there been any cases of player revolt since the era of the transfer portal? My guess is that the days of player revolts are over since anyone who is dissatisfied can easily go elsewhere. If transfer were as difficult as it used to be, then there would be a much stronger incentive for team leaders to militate for changes in coaching.
In fact, I would dearly love to hear what the players actually think, and I suppose we will find out once we see who enters the transfer portal.

Much as I wish it weren’t so, the next time Sam is categorically wrong about the program (at least WRT something that can be factually confirmed) will be the first, so I trust his comment. The question really is how bad will it be?
Players may love Shaw, but you can’t blame them for being frustrated with the state of the program. I think for players who can graduate with a Stanford degree, the allure of the transfer portal will be hard to pass up. Who wouldn’t want to have at least one bowl game during their career?
The question is how many will leave before they get their degree? If a substantial number do, it’s a pretty big black eye.
Portal opens Dec. 5 for those keeping track.

Another indicator would be any decommits from players who have been admitted to date.

Will definitely be important to separate grad transfers since the vast majority of these are players who don't get admitted to grad school at Stanford (my source comes from within the Athletic Department).
Do I think a player revolt will happen? No, but I can hope because I think it's the only way we get a new head coach. I don't have any confidence in Muir to do the right thing.

I heard a mini player revolt is how Harris got fired after just 2 years.

Yep. If I recall correctly, a bunch of the leaders of the team met with AD Bowlsby and told him of Harris’s incompetence+sadistic tendencies. Thank goodness Bowlsby took action and got us Harbaugh. No coach was ever a bigger a-hole than Walt Harris. My gosh I hate that blame-the-players, mock-the-players, assign-more-bearcrawls, punt-on-third-down loser.

The more the crappier players leave the better. There are about six or seven of the plus two year vets who I hope stay.
Stat Man Mick, any idea of how many fans are entering the portal? Or are they just going to stay away and do something else on home Saturdays like many here?

How do you determine who is crappy when the coaching/development is so bad? Recruiting rankings have their faults but it's not bad in aggregate to determine talent.

Phogge - 11-23-2022
You use the eye test and not the rankings. An NFL player and Stanford alum's formula. But you can't just watch the whole field. You need to ISO guys with glasses or long lens. That's how I watched the unheralded Ben Muth years ago. From nowhere to all conference. Great footwork, held his own.
Desire is hard to quantify. On a couple of plays the other night Card players avoided contact. Collinsworth commented on one of them. Of course I get paid to do it.

Walt Harris was just an awful coach. He couldn't even hold the job of QB coach for Akron or OC for California College (in Pennsylvania) for more than one year each. I am still mystified how he did so well at Pitt.
There are only a handful of players on the team currently that I would be sad (from a football standpoint) if they transferred. But, as BC implied, most of the players that we currently have (and, probably, most historically) come for the Stanford degree, so are loathe to transfer pre-diploma. The more that do transfer pre-degree, the greater the indictment on Stanford, Shaw, and Muir (who I don't think is getting enough blame). Were Peat and Jones the first players to transfer pre-diploma?
