SHAW QUITS - footandballtorture - 11-27-2022
Perhaps this will curb some of those hoping to transfer out, though I don’t think any staffing changes will have many vital parts of the team who already have escape plans in mind. They’ve given golden years to a program that has left them injured and without morale. I don’t blame those that leave even with Shaw gone. Sad to see our top players go but I wish them luck!

Team has seemingly been stuck in the locker room talking for a good 40mins at this point. No post game conference and no activity from stanford football media like usual post-games.

I don’t know if this is confirmed. I did notice one thing.
After the bad snap on the PAT, Shaw very uncharacteristically took a walk down to the other end zone. It seemed like he wanted to be alone for a couple minutes… one last time?

This is a step in the right direction. However, if Muir is heading up the search for Shaw's successor, I remain worried. I hope Muir gets lots of sound help and advice in vetting all possible candidates. If not, we could end up with Walt II or Buddy II. Then the agony continues.
The other big question is where does Shaw go from here. Does he find some holding pattern at the university? Is he even involved in the search for his successor? The way the resignation sounds, this was Shaw's decision (though this could all be window dressing). Frankly, I hope Shaw has no input into the selection process. Who knows? He might even push for one of his coordinators.
I am grateful for the excellent years under Shaw and wish his tenure hadn't ended so disastrously. But it did, and it was past time for a change.

I wish Shaw well on his next thing. I would not be surprised if he just stayed on at Stanford University (not football) in some very comfortable fundraising or outreach role. This was overdue and I now have some hope that Stanford can return to the Harbaugh / early Shaw days.

I wish I had been the one to start this thread, because the correct title — as in the email from the Athletic Dept — is “Thank you, Coach David Shaw.”
Now is a great time to reflect on the incredible accomplishments during Coach Shaw’s tenure, including becoming the winningest coach in Stanford history and delivering two Rose Bowl victories.
During an era of scandals in sports, Coach Shaw delivered extraordinary accomplishments while constantly reaching to do things the right way, making a greater impact on society as a whole, and contributing to the excellence and reputation of the university he loves.
It is no surprise to me that even his departure was done in a way that is best for the university — starting the process of a new search at an optimal time, with no drama or scandal.
When the news was announced that Stanford would be modifying its processes to accommodate the realities of the transport portal, some viewed it as a cynical ploy for Shaw to cling on, but I think it is clearer now that, until his last day, he was taking steps to make the program stronger regardless of who leads it next.
Of course I would love for an even greater era to lie ahead in Stanford’s future, but I can’t imagine a greater run than Shaw’s — when I consider both what he accomplished and how he did things.

Don't hold your breath! The challenges ahead include:
1) Finding a coach (and staff) that can execute the turnaround
2) Retaining what little talent is left on the team
3) Recruiting new talent to join them
4) Navigating the NIL and portal complexities
Even if we find another JH, there are innumerable pieces to fix and new elements in the football landscape to figure out, including the uncertain fate of the Pac-12. But maybe we will get lucky again and can celebrate a return to relevance after 3 seasons. If it happens any faster than that, it will be a miracle. It may, in fact, never happen again if Stanford cannot figure out how to navigate the NIL and the portal.

It is the end of an era; that era included a few increasingly bad years at the end, but many good years at the beginning. In fact, the best years in Stanford football history. I had many more games of enjoyment than of frustration under Shaw.
David Shaw must have decided to leave some time ago, given the prepared statements and the timing immediately after the last game. In that last presser when he discussed changes to NIL and transfer, when he said the focus was on trying to send the seniors out on a win...he knew. Even in his departure, David Shaw was attempting to do what was best for the long term future of Stanford football and his student-athletes.
So I do say "thank you" to David Shaw--genuinely felt. Thank you for being a principled and ethical representative of my alma mater. Thank you for bringing our program to its most successful stretch in program history. And thank you for departing in a classy way.
