WBB: Question about Haas -
81alum - 01-03-2023
After all these years, I am finally going to go to the game @ Cal. I've never been. Advice on what kind of ticket to buy and where to sit?

Mostly general admission. Don’t sit near the band

Parking is very limited. I haven't been for a few years, but I know they have since replaced the parking lot we used with a new aquatic facility. There is a parking garage next to Haas (pay per hour) but I am not sure if it is open for the public. That would be my first place to try and park.
The band is located behind the basket near the visitors bench. Again it has been a few years so they may have relocated.

I usually part in the public garage at the corner of Telegraph and Durant (or can be accessed from Channing. It spans the block on Telegraph between Durant and Channing). For access, Durant is one way, running eastward from Shattuck toward the hills. Channing is a two-way street, so doesn't matter which direction you're coming from. From the garage, it's one block to Bancroft, which is on the edge of campus. then several blocks down (toward the Bay) on Bancroft to Haas.. This garage should have space without a problem. I'm planning to use it on Sunday. As for seating, lots of reserved seating is not available to buy, I assume because of season tickets. But many of those seats remain unoccupied, so you can "upgrade" your general admission seats by moving judiciously.

Avg. attendance has been 1300 to 1500 which leaves you about 10,000 seats to choose from.

There's a BART station within easy walking distance. I'd suggest doing park and ride to avoid the traffic and parking issues in Berkeley.

Visit
this map around Haas showing the vehicle break-ins and vehicle thefts in the last month around Haas.
For a POSSIBLE comparison, compare
this map that maybe gets reports from Stanford Police. At least, it shows 3 Vehicle Break-in/Theft on the Stanford campus in the last month. But I'm not 100% sure that it gets all their reports. (For instance, these could be reports from Los Altos police of crimes reported to it that took place on Stanford campus.)
Note that neither of these map sites get statistics from all jurisdiction.
The 2nd map shows such reports in Fremont, but none at the Fremont Bart Station.

I have always used BART, but I live two blocks from a San Francisco BART station so driving would be silly for me. I am not going this year, haven't in years, mostly because I dislike watching games there, not because of anything fans do or the like, just that the seating, the noise level, the sight lines (always feels like I am looking way down onto the court even if I am not high up), etc. bug me.

Hey, thanks for those links. Alwas looking for possibly useful data sources!

I miss the old Haas. It had character, and you could easily sit close enough to thoroughly enjoy the game. The new (well, it's now, what, 20+ years old) feels like trying to watch a game from the top floor of a 30-story mausoleum.
I hate that it is so close to my house, but it takes me even longer to get there what with driving, parking, etc., and much more expensive.
Leaning toward not going, though I feel guilty about that.

I doubt that I'll go, but if some Cardboarders are going, maybe you want to just agree on a section to meet up in, or at least a half-time meeting point. I find that the small group of us that meet at Maples at the half gives info from others, and gives me a chance to process & evaluate the first half.

I'm planning to go and would be interested in meeting up in GA to sit together. My first trip there as well. Might also grab a Top Dog before the game rather than eating concession stand food.
Cheers,

Eating before might be a good idea. Concessions at Haas are vastly inferior to those at Maples

My daughter lives in North Berkeley, so parking isn't an issue for me. I will park with her and walk.
I was more interested in where to sit. Reserved seats are available but I'd rather sit with other Stanford fans, and don't know if there is a designated section for opposition fans.
If I buy a general admission ticket I'd like to know where Stanford people congregate.

Hi 81alum,
I don't know where Stanford fans usually sit at Haas (my first trip too). However, it looks like the visitors bench is in front of section 1 so the closest GA section would be 28, the corner section that still looks like it has pretty good views. The band is apparently behind that basket so you would be behind the band if you wanted GA behind the basket and the students sit behind the other basket. I just got a reserved seat in section 1 behind the Stanford bench so that I don't have to worry about where to sit. Hopefully the weather is decent and I can enjoy some record stores and food before the game.
Cheers,
Pete F.

Has anyone ever had success getting tickets for road games from the Stanford ticket office or our WBB director of basketball operations? The team gets an allotment of tickets for parents/families right behind the bench but if some are unaccounted for, would general fans or season ticket holders be able to snatch extra tickets close to the bench that way? Just a thought.

Cal season ticket holder here. (don't boo, I didn't get admitted to Cal, so wore Stanford gear for a while after I was rejected)
Yes, Section 1 is behind the Stanford bench. Any row that begins with a "letter" instead of a #, is a reserved chairback.
Chairbacks are sections 1,2,3 & 15,16 & 17. 17 would be across from the Stanford bench, but it's usually filled in the lower section.
The band sits in section 23. Keep in mind school is out, so there have only be 15 or so band members. However, being a Stanford game, alumni band members usually show up so I'd except 20 to 30?
Another option might be to get a GA ticket, then sit in the student section down by the court in front of sections 15, 16 & 17. When school is out, they "usually" let anyone sit down there. But I' don't know what will happen if you show up in Stanford gear. Keep in mind, there may also be screaming kids sitting there.
Buying a GA ticket then moving to a chairback is usually easy for non-Stanford games. Not sure how it will be this time. Definitely avoid sections 2 & 3 and sit up in the higher rows if chairback is your priority. Season ticket holders are usually in J and below in the chairback sections.

Forgot to mention about parking.
The game is on Sunday, so meters are not active. And since school is out, there's usually plenty of street parking in the area. (as mentioned, there are many one way streets, so it's not always easy to just "go around the block".
As for car break-in, the area near Haas has very few car break ins. Just be sure to not leave anything visible in your car. Not a sweater, umbrella or even an empty brown paper bag. Put everything you don't need in the trunk BEFORE you drive to the game.
And just avoid the area around People's Park where there are usually homeless encampments. You should easily find parking closer to the gym than that since school is out.
The RSF garage is the closet and that's where the Season Ticket holders park. It's usually permit parking on game days. All of the other lots will have plenty of space, especially since street parking is free on Sunday. If I didn't have a parking pass, I'd definitely park on the street and not in a lot.
