The NCAA and Michigan - OutsiderFan - 01-06-2023
It's being reported the NCAA is targeting Michigan for violations, and more specifically, Jim Harbaugh.
My reaction is to laugh at the NCAA. To me, it has zero credibility and any investigation into "rule breaking" can't be taken seriously. I may be wrong about this, but my perception is there are NCAA rules being broken with impunity these days given transfer portal and NIL market. Makes me wonder how dozens and hundreds of violations can be committed by dozens of other schools, and somehow Michigan is in trouble for whatever it did?
Curious how the rest of you feel about this and the NCAA as a rule enforcer these days.

No contract rules are absurd in the context of today’s recruiting world. I would not be surprised if courts held them to be improper restraints on trade.

Was that supposed to say "no contact rules"?
I might not be surprised if the courts hold them as a restraint of trade (and we have a whole off target thread about non-compete agreements). Given the number of transfers and the portal, the NCAA *might* have a defense that there is no evidence that the no contact rules are hurting the athletes, but it is a rapidly evolving legal situation so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ?

Looks like the violations look to have been pretty minor, except for lying to the NCAA. Oops.

Might be enough of a bother to just jump to Denver or Carolina.
Hard to imagine the NCAA will do much with these given how many other, IMHO more significant, violations have been dismissed. The one about the analyst on the field is probably bigger for other teams as creating game day advantages just has a different impact.
Still, even when the NCAA decides to give a program a pass, the coaches and administrators have to deal with interviews, investigations, compliance questions and more. The Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and other NFL offers might have even more appeal now for JH.
