WBB: USC 55 Stanford 46 - 81alum - 01-14-2023

Preview:

Stanford survived 7 close quarters of basketball against Cal and UCLA to gain two tough wins coming into this game.  USC, however, lost by a single point to UCLA and then just destroyed Cal by 63-43 to come into this game on an upswing.  USC is 12-4, although it has lost to all the really good teams it has played--twice to UCLA, once to Oregon, and once to Texas.  As a result, it is unranked, Massey has USC at 42, and the NET is at 41.

USC is coached by Lindsay Gottlieb in her second year at USC, and the team is in transition, and is mostly unrecognizable from previous iterations.

USC is led in scoring by Kadi Sissoku, a 6'2" grad student forward from France, at 15 ppg.  She hits the three quite well (36%) and also shoots inside at a high percentage.  She played 3 seasons at Minnesota and her freshman season at Syracuse.  (Sissoku is out with a broken finger at the moment.)_

Rayah Marshall, a 6'4" sophomore forward, scores 15ppg.  She doesn't hit the three often or well, but she is a home-grown USC talent.  She is actually listed as a guard/forward and moves quite well for 6'4".  She also has 42 blocks on the year, so she is a defensive presence.

Destiny Littleton, a 5'9" grad student guard, is USC's third double digit scorer, at 12 ppg.  We should recognize that name.  She played at Texas for 2 years, then South Carolina for 2 years, and we saw her at both stops.  Her three point shooting has been a little off this year--29%--but she can heat up from range and is a consistent threat to drive and to pop.  She is also the point guard, with an excellent 2:1 assist to turnover ratio.  She also hits 90% of her free throws!

Kayla Williams and Okako Adika are the other two starters, but Gottlieb has been playing a rotation of 10 in double digit minutes.  Adika, from Denmark, is on her 4th school.  She is a 6' grad student guard with 43% three point shooting.  Williams is a 5'7" junior guard who is shooting only 29%.

Also starting since the injury to Sissoku  is Taylor Bigby.  Bigby is a 6'1" redshirt freshman guard who went to Oregon last year, was injured, and then transferred to USC.  So she is more evidence of the "team of transfers" philosophy.  Bigby has now started in 6 games, is shooting a solid 41% and 39% from three point range.

USC has a lot of talent, despite losing 5 players, including star Alisa Pili, to transfers out.  Gottlieb nabbed 7 transfers in, and has been stitching together a team with a lot of one year players.  Who knows what they will look like next year.  Under those circumstances the problem is not talent but coordination, and USC has been coming together of late.

No rest for the weary, 81.  Thanks as always for the previews.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - BobK - 01-14-2023

Thanks again For the great preview. So great I really hate to add but:
Sissoku hasn’t played the last two games
Littleton is the all time HS leading scorer in the state of California. While Littleton’s career hasn’t been close to her HS career it’s great that she is in Grad school

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - 81alum - 01-14-2023

Thanks for that Bob.  Any idea on what happened to Sissoku?  Injury?

Yes, looking over the last few games she has been out, replaced in the starting lineup by Taylor Bigby.  Bigby is a 6'1" redshirt freshman guard who went to Oregon last year, was injured, and then transferred to USC.  So she is more evidence of the "team of transfers" philosophy.  Bigby has now started in 6 games, is shooting a solid 41% and 39% from three point range.

Sissoku broke a finger around 1st of year

Vegas odds on game, Stanford by 15.5

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - 81alum - 01-15-2023

My guess is that the Cal UCLA game will run long, and that our game will start on the Bay Area channel.

Currently I can't get the game on either channel.  UCLA Cal is going long, and Stanford wrestling is on the Pac 12 Bay Area channel despite the Pac 12 banner saying that is where the WBB game is.

It is available here:

I still don't understand this starting lineup.  No spacing and just a turnover festival.

Don’t try that on mobile, esp if you have the Pac-12 Now app installed. If you follow the link to the app, “bonus” is nowhere to be found. Why aren’t all Pac-12 channels carried on Fubo.tv?

Back on the main channel.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - BosCard - 01-15-2023

We are always going to have slow starts with this starting lineup.  Anytime Iriafen is in the post she is triple teamed.  And the best shot we can hope for is a Brink 3.  And the team gets frustrated so they try to do too much and turn the ball over 3 straight times.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - TonyLima - 01-15-2023

Double-dribble? RUFKM?

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - Canalejas - 01-15-2023

A slow start against my least favorite school, while wearing my least favorite of our uniforms.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - 81alum - 01-15-2023

The good news is we held them to 11 points in the quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - mbdude - 01-15-2023

4pts 6 tos!!
I agree with rhe coment about lineup. Brink stays in same spot, ditto Hannah and Kiki, no movement

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - BosCard - 01-15-2023

Jones, Brink and Iriafen are a collective 12/63 from 3 coming into this game.  That's 19%.  We are basically starting 3 power forwards.  It's not a great lineup.  Super easy to defend and takes away the strengths of all 3 players.

RE: WBB: Stanford @ USC Sunday 2pm - TheFarm07 - 01-15-2023

We are losing 4-11 as our offense is in the doldrums right now. We only made 2 FGs all quarter long (20% from the field) and then for stretches especially at the beginning, we weren't even attempting shots as we turned over the ball 4 times in a row (6 times in the quarter).

Tara was substituting liberally, trying to find an answer but nothing yet.

It's not like Gottlieb's squad is lighting things up either. Giving up 11 points is not a disaster and 33% opposing FG% is not exactly setting off alarm bells either.

I strongly believe when we struggle and when we lose, it's going to be the offense struggling, which will be our undoing.
