Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - Bruce Wang - 01-20-2023

It sounds like what some of us (myself included) suspected.  The Clapper didn't like what he heard from the administration as to what Stanford was willing and able to do with the transfer portal and NILs.

Didn’t think Garrett would be a particularly good hire.  So, not sorry he passed.  But NIL and portal are massive issues moving forward.

This sounds like post-rejection damage control to me. "Oh yeah? Well I didn't want the job anyways."

Also, not a fan of SI "articles." All this one did was quote Garrett twice from another show, then provide exactly zero new helpful information.

The magnitude of some of these NIL deals is astounding.  Five star QB Jaden Rashada sought and got a release from his Florida commit because a promised $13 million NIL deal fell through.  Insanity.
He had already switched from Miami to Florida and now he may be considering...KAL????  Yikes.

At this stage in the recruiting cycle, is there any free cash that's available for Jaden?  Not a great time to re-open the bidding...

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - washingtonismoney - 01-20-2023

Right. Not suggesting Stanford's suddenly turned into Alabama out there, but they've been able to bring in an interesting prospect and stay in the hunt for other notable ones in the portal. Garrett's comments strike me as excuse-making -- not surprising for the coach so poor he caused the Giants to turn down Daniel Jones's fifth-year option. A very expensive piece of bad coaching, essentially.

Gotta say, if I’m an NIL big money supplier, I’d spend my 13 mil on proven sophomores through seniors, not incoming high school students.

Either they will play and be true frosh and probably not a brobdingnagian difference maker, or they might be gone by year 2.

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - OutsiderFan - 01-20-2023

Cal fans don't seem to want any part of Rashada. He apparently has a really bad helicopter dad, and doesn't perform against good opponents in high stakes games.  Of course, Cal fans will pee themselves with glee if Rashada were to sign with them. He's now reportedly looking at Colorado because Deion Sanders is exciting apparently.

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - Giants - 01-20-2023

Coach Prime just flipped the #1 CB.  He was previously committed to Miami.

Colorado is going to be a player in the new P-10.

Sanders has flipped another highly rated recruit

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35484725/deion-sanders-lands-cormani-mcclain-top-cb-flips-colorado

Quote:Deion Sanders and Colorado flipped five-star cornerback Cormani McClain from Miami on Thursday, giving Sanders his first five-star as the Buffaloes' coach.

McClain, ESPN's No. 4 prospect overall, is the highest-ranked recruit Colorado has brought in since ESPN began ranking players in 2006. He had been committed to the Hurricanes since October and was originally planning to sign with Miami in the early signing period in December, but abruptly decided to wait once Sanders was hired at Colorado.

What Sanders is doing at Colorado might single-handedly cause the NCAA and/or Congress to act to regulate NIL and the transfer portal.  Basically, he's buying players like an NFL team.  Except there are no rules with NIL and no cap like the NFL salary cap.

If his team of mercenary players wins a NC in the next couple of years, you can bet that the majority of D1 schools will be screaming for new rules.

The first thing the NCAA could do is change the transfer rules.  Just bringing back the rule that transfers have to sit out one season would have a significant impact.

Any enforced restriction of transfers or trade will be challenged in court and probably fare poorly for the NCAA.

The only thing that will happen if Deion has success buying players is he’ll be the next coach at (insert SEC school here)

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - BostonCard - 01-21-2023

Why are you so sure that restrictions on transfers would fail in court?  I think the MCAA could plausibly make a case that players who transfer wind up hurting their chances of graduating, and that having them sit out a year allows them to focus on studying.

Other rules that can be implemented: NIL deals cannot be made before a student enrolls in school, and cannot be made contingent on enrolling in a certain school, cracking down on solicitations, and counting transfers against the 25 per year limit (so that a school can have 25 new students, whether freshmen or transfers).

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - Giants - 01-21-2023

Given that all the momentum is towards a system in which players are compensated, the notion of reversing recent actions is nonexistent.

Heck, there are already several significant court cases pending that will further open the gates.  Prepare for more, rather than less, “player freedom”.

RE: Jason Garrett cites portal and NILs - needle - 01-21-2023

You want serious NIL restrictions?

Treat players as employees and go to the bargaining table.

That’s the choice.

That would be the end of college sports.

Well, it will happen eventually.  Of that, there is no doubt.  The question is when.  I would suggest that by the end of this decade we will see revenue-producing college sports functioning in a collectively-bargained environment.  I also think many schools will opt not to participate at this level.  What happens to the athletic programs at those institutions?  It is anyone’s guess…..

The Supreme Court has taken a pretty dim view of “it’s for their own good” arguments when it comes to restricting student athletes. By all means the NCAA could try, but I do not expect them to be successful.

Now one interesting tact could be non-compete agreements as it comes to NIL deals. Perhaps a lucrative NIL deal could specify exclusivity for a X year period. While the FTC has recently focused on limiting non competes, that may not apply to a highly paid spokesperson.

I've noticed some pro teams in Australia are named for universities. I wonder what the history behind that is. Did Australia have an era long ago where college sports were a big deal, but it evolved into the teams splitting off and going pro, in contrast to the US model of outsized college athletic departments?

Happens a bit for soccer teams. For example UNAM Pumas (or Universidad Nacional) in Mexican soccer evolved out of amateur teams put on by the national university in Mexico City. Universitario in Peru has a similar history. I believe there are a few others -- but in Latin America my sense is that these amateur teams were among the strongest in the country and then gradually went pro.

Of relevance to the original subject of this thread: especially in the UK, but elsewhere also true, soccer started out as an officially amateur game, generally practiced by the wealthy and/or aristocratic of each society. But bit by bit as the masses became interested in what the classes were doing, this changed: it's not really practical for working-class people to play in the same sport, in the same league, on the same terms as the wealthy. You can't train or anything. So eventually players get no-show jobs, followed by formal payment arrangements, all bitterly resisted by toffs who want to keep soccer to themselves. It was, of course, a losing battle.
