I wonder who owns this scientific breakthrough. Stanford? It must be worth billions. Maybe this can help with the athletic department deficit, better student housing, and a makeover for Lake Lag.

Yeah that's what the prosecutors claim. I've read reports she booked the trip well in advance of the verdict for a close friend's wedding. The government has her passport which she didn't request back. She's asking to remain on bail until her appeal is heard. So I don't know if she was trying to flee the country. If she did, she would get caught and my guess is she knows that.

I read she cancelled after the verdict because she wasn't allowed to leave the country after the verdict. I'm not saying I believe her. The one way ticket is problematic. But if she had an elaborate plan to flee it seems she would have bought a return ticket to throw off the authorities.

It would seem to me that if she really wanted to flee, she wouldn't have chosen a one-way ticket to an adjacent country. Presumably, she would have had the resources to effect a less-traceable route.

Stanford owns the IP, though often the professors/grad students will start a company to commercialize the invention and will license it from the school fairly cheaply. Example, Googles search algorithm was developed at Stanford by Larry Page and Sergei Brin and Stanford held the patent, which it licensed to Google, confounded by Brin and Page.

Booking a one-way ticket is the way the 1% travel. Get to the destination for the event on time and they “decide” when to return.
