WBB: Stanford 71 -- UCLA 66 - 81alum - 02-18-2023

Preview:

When we last played UCLA, back on January 13, we won 72-59 in what now looks like a comfortable victory. But it was anything but comfortable. For the first three quarters UCLA stymied our offense much as Cal had done and USC was to do. After three quarters, the game was 51-49 and it felt like all the other root canal games we have played. Unsung heroes Emma-Nnopu and Lepolo got our stagnant offense going in the 4th quarter and we pulled away.

Since that game UCLA has gone 7-3--in streaks. They won 3, lost three, and more recently have won 4 in a row. The losses were at Colorado in OT, at Utah, and at home against Arizona. Their current win streak was over ASU, OSU, Oregon and Cal last night.

UCLA is ranked 16 in both the AP and coaches polls, 16 by Massey, and 24 in NET. An interesting disparity there. They are 21-6 overall, and 10-5 in conference. They are currently tied with Arizona for fourth and fighting to get that first round bye in the Pac 12 tourney.

In our last game, Osborne, Conti, and Bessoir all were in double digits, but Kiki Rice was held to just 2 points. Since we played them, two players have been surging.

Freshman Londynn Jones, who had 6 points against us, has been a much more effective scoring machine than Rice. She comes off the bench but regularly plays 30 minutes, sometimes twice as much as Rice or Camryn Brown. Last night, for example, she led UCLA in scoring against Cal with 19, going 3/5 from three point range and adding 3 assists to 0 turnovers.

Bessoir, the 6'4" redshirt sophomore, has come into her own. She is shooting 37% of her threes, but is agile enough to put it on the floor. She shoots as well as Prechtel at her best, but moves somewhat better.

Cori Close has always been willing to play physical defense, and last time she was able to discombobulate us for three quarters. I hope we have learned from our struggles, but last night's game against USC does not convince me that we are over our offensive woes. On the other hand, UCLA may not have any answer for 6'7". Betts played 2 minutes in our first game. It will be interesting to see how she does in this one.

Our defense will need to control Jones--but she is one of those quick little guards who can manufacture her own shot, so that is a tough assignment. Bessoir cannot be left unattended on the perimeter, so Brink may have to come out of the paint to defend her, lessening her shot blocking ability under the basket. Osborne has been a consistent double digit scorer for them, and Rice is capable of going off on any given night. Defending all those quick guards won't be easy--especially with their post shooting treys. It will be a challenging match up for us.

The decision that we fans need to keep in mind about Betts is... who would she defend? Can she guard Bessoir? That means coming out to the perimeter.

I sometimes wonder if playing some kind of zone, with Betts in the middle of it, would be workable. But too many teams can hit treys against the zone, so Tara has only very rarely ever used it. But if we don't, Betts is going to be limited in playtime depending on defensive assignments.

I don't think UCLA is as tough a matchup as U$C for us. The condoms have bigs to clog the paint and dare us to shoot from outside the paint. In contrast, the Polar Bears are more guard oriented.

We'll be able to score on them in the paint. We'll need to defend their guards well enough to not offset our inside advantage.

Astute remarks. I agree. The question is, who among our bigs can defend guards. What will the matchups be? I don't remember how we defended them last time, but it worked fairly well. Maybe this:

Brink on Bessoir Advantage Brink. She can move well enough to defend on the perimeter or inside on Bessoir.

Iriafen on 5'11" Kiki Rice? This is an awkward matchup. Iriafen is athletic enough, but Rice is probably quicker. We handled her last time though.

Jones on 5'11" Gina Conti? Conti is a so-so offensive threat, shooting only 32%.

Jump on 5'11" Camryn Brown Brown is not much of an offensive threat, few three point shots, only a handful of points a game.

Lepolo on 5'9" Charisma Osborne. Tough assignment. Lepolo gives up a couple of inches and a couple of years experience.

Now what if they bring in Londynn Jones in place of Brown or Conti? I'm not sure who could defend her. I wonder about Nivar. My guess is that Close would start Jones alongside Osborne and Rice if it were not for her defense. Sure she scores lots of buckets, but her diminutive size means the other side can score on her, too.

What if we wanted to play twin towers with Betts and Brink? Great on the offensive end, but who the heck does Betts defend? I don't think UCLA has anyone that is the right kind of player for Betts to defend. But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Close had her team driving to the basket in desperation to overcome our lead when we played UCLA at Pauley. That resulted in a grand block party for our women, and Brink had a field day! They kept coming in for more and Cam kept swatting them away! Close is unlikely to try that again, I would expect, if the game came down to it, that we would see more threes and screened mid-range shots.
Offensively, as you will recall, this was the game that Agnes saved our bacon. Tara might feel that she matches up well against UCLA players and use her, in spite of her inconsistency in other games.

For those who will be watching on TV: The game is scheduled for ESPN2. There is an MBB game in a 2-hour slot immediately preceding, so be on the lookout for the Stanford game to start on another channel if the men's game runs long.

Perhaps the Pac 12 could arrange to loan all of its current referees to the Big 10, or better yet, to the pro leagues in Spain or Turkey, on an indefinite basis.

All I can find on gostanford.com is “Senior Night to follow” (the game) and that our 4 seniors are the first to go undefeated vs Cal since 2006.
