WBB: Stanford 73 -- Colorado 62 - 81alum - 02-21-2023

Preview:

The scheduling gods were not kind to us on the last weekend of the regular season.  Having just played two physical, emotional games at home, including a Monday evening game, we must travel to Colorado for a very early Thursday game.  The normal Sunday to Friday schedule has been truncated at both ends!  Furthermore, we will be playing at altitude for the first time this year, against a team and a coach that revels in the overly-physical style of push, grab, and hack.  All season long I have been worried about this road trip--more so than the two road trips where we have already dropped games.

The Colorado thread from our home win is here:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=23985&pid=379913&highlight=WBB%3A+Stanford+62#pid379913

And the box score from that win is here:
https://gostanford.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2022-23/colorado/boxscore/37999

Since we beat Colorado at home, 62-49, Colorado has gone 6-2.  They beat UCLA in overtime but lost to USC at home, swept the Oregon schools, swept the Washington schools and ASU, but suffered a defensive beat down at Arizona similar to our USC loss.  That was their last game, losing 61-42.

Overall this year they are 21-6, 12-4 in conference which puts them in 3rd place a game ahead of Arizona (guess who Arizona is cheering for!)  They are ranked 21 in the AP, 20th by Massey, and 21st in NET.  If they beat us all kinds of weird things could happen, including a 3 way tie for 1st place in the conference, depending on how the rest of the weekend goes.  In short, losing there creates ugly possibilities.

Colorado is still led by 4 players in double digit scoring, the same four as reviewed in the first Colorado preview.  However, recently Tameiya Sadler, a 5'8" junior guard, has been coming off the bench and giving them points--leading them over the last two games.

While Colorado in the JR Payne era has been a bruising defensive team, this year they have 4 players shooting treys at 38% or higher, and doing it in some quantity.  Somehow we need to guard the perimeter while simultaneously keeping their two centers out of the paint, and also stay in front of Sherrod.  Arizona figured out how to do it last weekend, and we figured out how to do it last time out.  But doing it while sucking air might be a different story.

Last time Colorado did its own version of the pack-the-paint strategy, and Jump went 5/10.  Hitting threes in quantity against them will be crucial in loosening up their paint defense.  Brink was only able to go 3/11, and Betts in limited minutes 0/2.  Colorado picked its poison and opted to shut down our inside scorers.  If they do it again, we need accuracy from long range.

I prefer to look at it as a win clinches at least a tie for the regular season championship. A three way tie is possible, but unlikely, as it would require Utah to beat Stanford but lose to Cal.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Colorado Thursday 2pm - Spiny_Norman - 02-21-2023

I hope that it is ok (not tempting the woofing gods) to review the P12 process for breaking ties for seeding purposes in the conference tournament. From the P12 website:

Two-team tie
a. Results of head-to-head competition during the regular season.
b. Each team’s record (won-lost percentage) vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular standings, and then continuing down through the standings until one team gains an advantage. When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record (won-lost percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
c. Won-lost percentage against all Division I opponents.
d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

Multiple-team tie
a. Results (won-lost percentage) of collective head-to-head competition during the regular season among the tied teams.
b. If more than two teams are still tied, each of the tied team’s record (won-lost percentage) vs. the team occupying the highest position in the final regular season standings, and then continuing down through the standings, eliminating teams with inferior records, until one team gains an advantage.
When arriving at another group of tied teams while comparing records, use each team’s record (won-lost percentage) against the collective tied teams as a group (prior to that group’s own tie-breaking procedure), rather than the performance against individual tied teams.
After one team has an advantage and is seeded, all remaining teams in the multiple-team tie-breaker will repeat the multiple-team tie-breaking procedure.
If at any point the multiple-team tie is reduced to two teams, the two-team tie-breaking procedure will be applied.
c. Won-lost percentage against all Division I opponents.
d. Coin toss conducted by the Commissioner or designee.

Example 1 - if Stanford beats Colorado and then loses to Utah and the teams end up tied at 15-3, the first tie-breaker would be head to head. Stanford and Utah would be 1-1 vs. each other. Assuming Colorado finishes 3rd, Stanford would win the tie-breaker with a 2-0 record vs. Colorado while Utah is 1-1.

Example 2 - if Stanford loses to Colorado and then beats Utah and the teams end up tied at 15-3, Stanford would win the first tie-breaker with a 2-0 record vs. Utah.

Actually, if Stanford loses to Colorado and beats Utah, Stanford will end up at 15-3, but Utah will wind up at 14-4 (assuming they have beaten Cal) and so Stanford won't need the tiebreaker.

Doh! Silly me, yes of course.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Colorado Thursday 2pm - treetop11 - 02-21-2023

Yes, this is the ultimate test. We have had this tough stretch of games and have three games this week on a quick turnaround.

I would like to see Tara give Prechtel, Betts, Belibi, and Bosgana 20+ minutes (or close to it) in this game. The first three are Colorado natives so it would be nice to give them extra PT at their home state, especially if they have family and friends in attendance. More importantly, we can expect an ugly, physical game from CU. Prechtel and Betts both have the bulk and physical strength to push bakc and prevail. Belibi and Bosgana are very aggressive. These four can match and exceed CU's aggressiveness and physicality.

Although I have advocated for our 2 AA's to carry load down the stretch and thorugh the tourneys, I also think this would be a good game to give Cam and Haley (and Jump) some rest. They have been really putting out a great deal of effort and PT lately. And with the short turnaround, they could use a "light" game" and be ready for Utah. Also, no need to subject them to a full or almsot full game of banging from CU players.

I would start Brink, Prechtel, Jones, Jump, and Lepolo. On O, Prechtel would either bring out one of CU's posts to give Brink more room down low and open up the paint or she would have open 3 point shots. On D, the two would be a nightmare for CU trying to score in the paint. Brink should play enough minutes at the start ot get into the flow of the game, but then replace her with Betts. Rotate in Belibi and use Brink selectively. I would not use Kiki much at all - I think she would be more effective against Utah. Same with Jones; get her in the flow and then sub in Bosgana for her. Would also like to see a good amount of Lepolo, Nivar, and Emma-Nnopu - but not those three at the same time. Either Bosgana or Demetre need to be in when two of those three are on the court.

I believe that we can and will win with more PT for our bench and less reliance on Brink, Jones, and Jump. Even with our three best scorers, we likely won't score as high particularly at CU's place. Rather, we should out-physical and out-aggressive CU - beat them down and impose our will. And I'm confident our bench players will score once they get into the flow. However, it's also important that we have quickness and intensity/good D on the perimeter as Cu has quick, good scoring guards. We will control the paint, and it's equally important not to give CU much space on the outside and to have ballhandlers not committing turnovers.

I'll be in attendance in the eighth row of Section 21.  Good seats are still available for under $15, including fees.  Hopefully I won't be the only CardBoarder in attendance.

It will be:
6 games in 16 days.
4 of the 6 were / will be road games.
5 of the 6 were / will be against ranked teams.
The games have been physical -  that seems to be a key strategy against Stanford. We know CO will play rough.

Hopefully our depth and determination can offset these negative factors.

Betts struggles going 20 minutes at sea level; I don't think she will do well getting 20 minutes of playing time at altitude.

She grew up, and as recent as last year, playing at altitude. And I suspect she played a minimum of 20 minutes each game.

All true, but she was playing at HS game speed, not at the speed and physicallity of the college game

Physicality isn't affected by altitude. Of course, speed of college game is faster, but she has to deal with that in all games regardless of where played. In HS, she still had to run up and down the court and I doubt if she ran slower than she does now. Altitude will have no significant effect on her.

In HS she lived and practiced at altitude. In college she hasn't, and her body's physiological adaptations to altitude are long gone. Going up to Boulder a day before the game will have only a minor benefit for us. The right shift of the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve effected at altitude by the body's increase in 2,3 DPG occurs over days. Just ask Tessier-Levigne about his aerobic capacity on his ski trips on the first day versus several days later.  :)

Bottom line: the altitude will affect everyone on our team who plays, I'll bett you.
