WBB: Seeding possibilities - 81alum - 02-21-2023

For the Pac 12 tournament, seedings get complicated when two teams are tied.  The tiebreakers are explained on the Pac 12 standings page:

https://pac-12.com/womens-basketball-standings

Here are the mostly likely (and some less likely) possibilities:

If we lose at Colorado and lose at Utah, and we assume that Cal loses to both also, then the Pac 12 seedings would be:
1) Utah 15-3
2) Stanford 14-4
3) Colorado 14-4

Stanford and Colorado would go to a tiebreaker, which would be how they performed against Utah, and since each is 1-1 they would go to the next tiebreaker, which we can't predict just yet but would probably be how they each performed against Arizona or perhaps UCLA.  Stanford wins either of those tiebreakers since we beat Arizona twice and Colorado is 1-1 against Arizona.  If UCLA, we are 2-0 and Colorado is 1-0 so it would go to the Arizona tiebreaker, so we win again.

If we beat Colorado and lose at Utah, and we assume that Cal loses to both also, then the Pac 12 seedings would be:
1) Stanford 15-3
2) Utah 15-3
3) Colorado 13-5

Stanford and Utah would be tied, but Stanford get the tiebreaker because it beat Colorado twice and Utah was 1-1 against Colorado.

If we lose at Colorado and win at Utah, and we assume that Cal loses to both also, then the Pac 12 seedings would be:
1) Stanford 15-3
2) Utah 15-3
3) Colorado 13-5

In this case, Stanford and Utah have the same records vs. Colorado, so it would go to the 4th place team--likely Arizona.  Stanford is 2-0 against Arizona while Utah is 1-1 against them.  We win that tiebreaker.

Finally, if Stanford wins at Colorado and at Utah, and Cal loses at both, it is easy for us of course:

1) Stanford 16-2
2) Utah 14-4
3) Colorado 13-5

Basically, so long as we win one of two, we will have the top seed.

Less likely scenarios involve Cal winning one or two games in the mountains, USC somehow rising to 4th place and thus becoming a tiebreaker team, etc.  The odds of USC winning out and Arizona and UCLA both losing 2 are pretty slim.  However, if this were to happen, then Utah wins the tiebreaker with us since it is 1-0 against USC.

If the Pac 12 tournament were seeded today, here is how it would look.  Note we might have to play Washington again, but would likely avoid USC.

Play in Day:

5) UCLA vs. 12) ASU

8) Washington vs. 9) Oregon

7) WSU vs 10) Cal

6) USC vs 11) Oregon State

Quarters if seeds held true:

1) Stanford vs. 8/9 winner (Washington)

2) Utah vs. 7/10 winner (WSU)

3) Colorado vs. 6/11 winner (USC)

4) Arizona vs. 5/12 winner (UCLA)

Semis if seeds held true:

1) Stanford vs 4) Arizona

2) Utah vs. 3) Colorado

Finals if seeds held true:

1) Stanford vs. 2) Utah

Just win.  A 1 or 2 seed in the Pac-12 tourney doesn't really matter.  We are going to have to play the best anyway.

I'm more concerned about the NCAA seedings if we drop any more games.

True enough.  The above was a fun exercise, but for a natty we should just win 11 in a row.

triaddukefan on the UConn Boneyard message board posts a link to this tool for determining conference tournament seedings: http://bball.notnothing.net/pac12.php?sport=wbb

I've linked the page for the Pac-12 wbb.  Click on the school to choose the winners of each of the two remaining games (it will highlight your selected winners in red with yellow border).  Click on the "Calculate Seeds" button to display the seedings for conference tournament bracket.  You can navigate to other conference tournaments (men's and women's) from the pulldown menus at the top of the webpage.

Very cool!  Thank you for the link!

This is wrong.  Stanford is 14-2.  Utah is 13-3.  Colorado is 12-4.  If we lose to Colorado and beat Utah we will end 15-3.  If Utah beats Cal and loses to Stanford, they will wind up 14-4.  If Colorado beats both Stanford and Cal they will end up 14-4.  The final standings will be:

Stanford 15-3
Utah 14-4
Colorado 14-4

I believe in that case Colorado would own the tiebreaker by dint of going 1-1 against Stanford, while Utah would have gone 0-2.

We control our own destiny so let's trust the team to focus on our games, period. All these permutations are making me crazy.

You are right BC.  I just plugged the scenario into the handy tournament calculator linked above, and it confirms your correction.

RE: WBB: Seeding possibilities - Spiny_Norman - 02-24-2023

The team can't look ahead past Utah to the P12 tournament. But we can.

As the #1 seed, Stanford will play at 2:30 next Thursday vs. the winner of the 8 vs. 9 game. Right now, that looks like it will be Washington vs. Oregon.

Here is the generic bracket with game times - https://static.pac-12.com/sports/basketball-w/pdf/22-23/2023_WBBT_Bracket.pdf

Washington defeated Oregon fairly handily just a week ago, so we might expect a rematch with Washington.  That might be a good thing--it would guarantee that we would not take them lightly after the debacle in Seattle.

RE: WBB: Seeding possibilities - 81alum - 02-25-2023

OK, here are our tournament games, I think:

Thursday 2:30 pm we play the winner of Oregon/Washington.

If we win, then

Friday 6pm we play the winner of Arizona/UCLA/Arizona State

If we win, then

Sunday 2pm we play the winner of Utah/Colorado/and all the rest.

If seeds hold true:
Game 1 Oregon
Game 2 Arizona
Game 3 Utah
