Preview:
Oregon squeaked by Washington in the play-in game in one of those low scoring defensive battles that we associate with teams like Washington, Colorado, and USC. PaoPao, who had been on fire (after a long slump) the last few games had a solid but non stratospheric 13 points. But Rogers exploded for 28 points, all the more remarkable considering how low scoring the game was. Our defense will need to control both Rogers and PaoPao, who have both shown their mettle in recent games.
Oregon has suffered through one of its worst seasons in years, not least because of the unexpected loss of Sedona Prince who was to have been a centerpiece of the team after the graduation of Nyara Sabally. But I don't think anyone expected that when we beat them back in January that PaoPao would slump and the team would lose 7 conference games in a row.

That game against Oregon was not exactly a showcase for our offense, however. Only Brink and Jump were in double digits, and it was Demetre coming in and hitting three treys that gave us the smallest of cushions. Oregon had Grey, Kyei, and VanSlooten in double figures, with PaoPao and Rogers at only 6 and 5 points. I expect tomorrow's game to be radically different, on the basis of PaoPao and Rogers both scoring prolifically of late. Graves said about their game with Washington that Oregon absolutely had to make their threes to win, and Rogers and PaoPao were collectively 5/13 from range. In our first meeting they were 1/7.
Oregon is 16/13 overall, 7/11 in conference, unranked, but somehow Massey has them at 32, and NET at a whopping 18. Hard to believe a team with 13 losses and barely a winning record is 18th, but Oregon has played a lot of very good teams. Bracketology has them as "the first team out" and thus they have a great deal to play for. If they beat us, they probably make it into the big dance.
Oregon presents a challenge to our defense, given that the three scorers who were in double digits against us last time are not the two scorers who have dramatically improved since. In short, they put 5 players on the court who can all score. Pretty obviously the first order of business is to control their three outstanding guards who shoot 42%, 39%, and 36% from three point range, but VanSlooten and Kyei give them an inside presence and competent rebounding.
Oregon flustered the Washington offense in their first quarter by playing a zone, before switching to man for most of the rest of the game. I expect we will see a mix of defenses from them to force us to prepare and to read defense. In their many losses, Oregon's defense was not usually the culprit--except giving up 100 to Utah. Their conference opponents otherwise beat them with scores in the 50s and low 60s, for the most part--as did we when we won by scoring 62.
In short, since our own offense has been suspect of late, and given that we only managed to score 62 against Oregon the first time, it makes it even more important that our defense be very solid and hold Oregon's surging Rogers and PaoPao in check. If we don't then we had better hope for a breakout game on offense unlike anything we have seen since our successful Arizona trip. Getting someone going other than our big three--maybe Demetre, maybe Betts, maybe Lepolo or Nivar or Emma-Nnopu--someone else will need to score in double digits if the Oregon guards continue to do what they have been doing in recent games.

If Tara starts Agnes and Lepolo again after two consecutive losses for that lineup, a few things are true:
1. Oregon will go back to Box and 1 with Hannah because no opposing coach takes that lineup with Agnes and Lepolo seriously
2. Oregon will get at least 20 offensive rebounds or more like the first game because we already know no combination of Agnes, Lepolo and Hannah helps on “defensive” rebounds )Brooke struggles too). No need to argue just isolate any of them vs Utah.
3. Stanford guaranteed to score 60 pts or less because that lineup is just as offensively challenged as the one with Kiki. Agnes had her one good game vs ASU recently. Lepolo has her one good shooting game vs UCLA recently. I hope they can buck their own trend of shooting better game to game and not just every 4 or 5 games.
4. Bosgana and Brooke will need to come in and save them.
5. We’ll know Tara is not serious about winning this tourney

Posts like that one make me hope that Lepolo and/or her parents don't read the Cardboard. Which is a shame. If someone wants to hate on a player, why don't they do it to themselves and not on a public internet board. Shameful.

Totally agree. Like, could we maybe hold off on the negative comments, at least until the game actually starts and we see how we’re playing? I mean ideally I’d love to just not get into negative commentary and predictions at all, but do we really want to start bad-mouthing the players and coaches before even a second of today’s game has been played?
I mean, first off, who does it help to predict bad things? Second, how do you know what’s going to happen on any given day? Who is or is not going to be in a great headspace and have a breakout game? Who is or is not going to hit some unexpected treys and silence the opposing fans? You don’t know. I don’t know. So why assume the worst?
Let’s, at the very least, wait until things actually start to play out to start commenting on any poor play, missed assignments, etc. that may or may not occur during today’s game.

I don't mind thoughtful negative comments. For example, pointing out that with Emma-Nopu and Lepolo on the floor together we might struggle with scoring because their reluctance to shoot will leave the defense more of a chance to focus on Jones, Jump, and Brink isn't unreasonable. But I find the overwrought hyperbolic catastrophising overdone. It also doesn't help when factually incorrect statements are made, like the argument that the lineup struggles to rebound when we captured 25/32 (78%) of the rebounds available on the Utah side of the court, which is more than our season average of 74%, and Utah's 7 offensive rebounds were fewer than our opponents' season average (~11). Maybe Oregon will get 20 offensive rebounds (they had 23 last time against that starting line-up), but we don't "know" anything until we actually play the game.
And of course saying "Tara is not serious about winning this tourney" completely undermines the poster's credibility. Saying, "I disagree with the coach because X" is very different than saying "If HOF coach does X, which I disagree with, then she is incompetent and doesn't want to win". LOL at that. I would really urge that poster to maybe show a bit more humility. Vanderveer may just have a very different assessment of the situation.

Gotta say while I enjoy analyzing what works and what doesn't, the constant repetition of the same negative comments has gotten really old. One thing I know for sure is that however much we fans want to see the team win, the players and coaches want to win much, much more. They are trying their best and deserve a bit of grace from fans. Sure we can talk about what could be better, but bashing the same players over and over is not fair and ultimately not helpful to anyone. I don't understand the purpose of predicting doom besides getting to say told ya so if things are not perfect, which of course they never will be.

The stats are messed up. They only show us with 2 offensive boards, but we have at least 4. Cam, Haley, Hannah, Telana.
