“That’ll never work.” - John Thomas. (OK, I made that up.)

One of the legendary greats in T&F! And a true revolutionary re technique, something that is nearly unique. A revolution made possible by equipment advances, in particular the landing pit for the high jump. The entire state of Oregon was hugely proud of him, esp. his alma mater, Oregon State University.

A true story: I broke my parents' bed because of Fosbury. Yes, summer of 1968, a 10 year old watching the Olympic Games, I had to try it myself. Landed on the edge of the bed and snapped the wooden side board.
Those Mexico City games were stuff of legend. Fosbury and his flop - not only was his jump unconventional, he would stand on the field pre jump, eyes closed and fists clenched, rocking back and forth to psych himself up. George Foreman - holding up a small American flag in the ring. And Tommie Smith and John Carlos with an indelible image.

I was flopping in the early 70s in 7th & 8th grade. Improved my height tremendously.
