WSwim - NCAA championships - Spiny_Norman - 03-16-2023

The women's swimming NCAA championship meet started last night in Knoxville and will continue through Saturday. Stanford is probably in the hunt for 3rd behind Virginia and Texas. Although it has some swimmers who will challenge for individual top finishes (especially Claire Curzan, Taylor Ruck and Torrie Huske), Stanford does not have the depth to challenge for the top team.

Stanford does have a good number of freestylers so will score well in relays. They finished 2nd last night behind Virginia in the 800 free relay.

Stanford finished 3rd behind now 3 time champ Virginia. Virginia was dominant, winning all 5 relays and several individual events. They look like they will be at the top for years to come.
1. Virginia  541.5
2. Texas     414.5
3. Stanford 333

Stanford did have 2 individual champions - Taylor Ruck in the 200 free and Claire Curzan in the 200 back.

Stanford runners up - Torri Huske in the 200 IM and the 100 free.

Teammate of my daughter has committed to UVA and will be a 2024 HS grad. She's pretty good. . . .

3rd isn't bad, but we've a long way to go to get back to the top. At least we're not in Cal's situation at the moment. . ..

According to Swim Swam Stanford has had the #1 recruiting class for 3 years in a row: Swim Swam 2022 recruiting rankings Regan Smith turning pro really hurt us this season - probably not enough on its own to make us competitive with Virginia, but we would have been a lot closer.  Looks like Virginia's 2023 recruiting class will be rated ahead of ours for 2023 though.

If we've had the #1 recruiting class 3 years in a row, why is there such a gap between us an UVA? I agree that having Regan Smith on the team wouldn't have given us the title, so is it lack of development from HS to college? From my untrained fandom, it seems like we have good top end talent, but lack the depth we've had in past years?

Its a good question why we seem to be underperforming.  The gap was brobdingnagian and hard to understand considering our recruiting rankings.
If we've had the #1 recruiting class 3 years in a row, why is there such a gap between us an UVA? Working with some folks to help bring tech to water polo training. Well, I guess working is a stretch, made some intros and they're working on bringing tech to polo.
