Love this team and this coach - Leftcoast - 03-20-2023
In Tara I trust .... but then I'm old enough to remember.
* I remember the state of women's basketball at Stanford before Tara.
* I remember our first two national championships and remember being thrilled talent like Jennifer Azzi, Val Whiting, and Sonja Henning now played for us (vs Tennesse, ODU, and USC)
* I remember hearing today's arguments before Mike Montgomery left the Men's team in 2004.
* I'm also old enough to remember our LAST national championship (you know, two whole years ago)
But mostly I trust Tara because I like having the winningest coach in college basketball history (men's or women's), coaching a handful of All-Americans, just two years removed from her last NC on OUR sidelines.
I love this team and I love this coach despite last night's shattering loss. I expect better next year just as I'm sure Tara and her coaching staff do - In fact, I know they were more shattered by the loss than any of us could possibly be.

I'm old enough too. Not interested at all in jumping ship. I appreciate having a team that I care enough about for it to hurt this much. It wasn't always so.

I'm violating my standard "stay off the board for at least three days after a crushing loss" policy by reading this thread, but the title of the thread suggested this one might be okay. Before I disappear back into my cave for two more days, please allow me to add one observation that, hopefully and presumably, someone already made elsewhere:
Cameron Brink is a warrior of the first order. She was obviously far less than her full self, as she doesn't miss at the basket the way she did yesterday. And she looked a shade of green. Think of how crappy and inefficient you are (or, at least, I am) when ill.
But she put it all out there. When I have to go to war, I'd love to have her at my side.
Gutsy efforts do not always lead to victory. But that doesn't make them any less gutsy. Fwliw, I feel mighty fortunate to be able to root for her.

We missed so many bunnies, not to mention free throws in this very winnable game.
At the end of the day, we are all just fans. It doesn't, nor should it, hurt more than the players and coaches. Our lives go on, as it should, but this loss will stay with the players for a long time I'd imagine, more so for the seniors unfortunately. But life moves on.

Both those things reflect why she is an overall star and AA.

I also admire the amazing improvement in Cam's free throw shooting. Having coached another sport that is technique driven, I know how difficult it is to get players to change their technique. They are looking for instant results and that rarely happens. Wherever Cam learned her new FT shooting method she must have bought into it from the beginning.
Cam's eye and nose area looked inflamed to me. I doubt she was anywhere near 100% but she gave everything she had.
In one timeout Tara told Betts she would be going in the game after the time out. Prechtel went to Betts, patted her on the back, and gave her some words of encouragement. I was impressed with that.
I'm looking forward to improvement for next year by Betts and Bosgana among others. It will be a whole different dynamic next season.

From my seat I could look across the court and watch as the players left out the tunnel. Some ran off quickly after the post-game center court huddle, no doubt wanting to get away and hide their grief. But after she led the team in the huddle, Haley was the last to leave. She consoled her teammates and helped to shepherd them toward the exit, but several times she paused and turned around or looked over her shoulder, waving at the crowd, not afraid to make eye contact with her watery eyes. The Haley I want to remember is the Haley who played with joy and was smiling as she exulted in the game, but this image of Haley is etched in my brain, and I don't think it is entirely a bad thing. We were standing and clapping and cheering them despite the loss, showing our love for the team, and she acknowledged us. The love between the fans and the players is mutual, and it was felt keenly in that agonizing moment.

Re Cam's free throws in the latter part of the season, she ended the season with at least 44 consecutive made free throws, going back to the ASU game on Feb 12 when she was 5/6. I don't know when the miss was in the game, so her consecutive could be anywhere from 44 to 49, depending on timing in ASU. Does anyone know what the Stanford record is for consecutive made free throws? This has to be close to it, or a new record. I do know that Pohlen was somewhere over 30 in 2010-11.

My only thing is it wasn’t just one game. This loss looked exactly like the USC loss or the UCLA loss. Exact same issues in all 3 games; so for me some of that falls on the coach. That said Tara did change through the year, and she obviously sees them in practice all the time so she knows them better then I do. Unfortunately, those adjustments didn’t work in the end.
It is also possible this team was flawed in ways that weren’t fixable. Or other changes would have created different, more serious flaws instead. I wanted a bigger team on the floor not a smaller one, but maybe we would have had 35 turnovers instead of 21. Tara has been doing this well for a long time; so I trust her more then me.
Now it’s hope that key players like Leopolo and Demetre and others work on their game for next year. I am worried though that some of the athletic limitations I see may not be fixable long term either.

Stanford vs. Arizona State - Women's College Basketball Play-By-Play - February 12, 2023 | ESPN
Brink's last miss was her fourth free throw, which was in the last quarter. So she made two consecutive free throws to end the game, meaning that she ended the year on a 46 made free throw streak. No idea who holds the Stanford record, but the NCAA record is 75, by Michelle Gaislerova, North Dakota St., Dec. 30, 2018-Feb. 23, 2020. So, if Brink makes 29 consecutive free throws to start next year, she will tie the NCAA record.
By the way, I think the Stanford men's record (and Pac-10 record at the time) is 49, by Ryan Mendez

Per the play-by-play I linked, she missed the back end of a pair of free throws with 5:16 left in the fourth quarter, then made both her free throws with 5:03 to go.

Haley Jones finishes her Stanford career 10th all time in career rebounds and 9th all time in rebounds per game. Not bad for player who is only listed at 6'1"! The team will sorely miss her on the boards.

Completely agree!!! I was very bitter Sunday evening and felt so selfish that I couldn’t accept all other accomplishments. I’m now looking forward to the end of this season to get closer to next. I do not see this happening next season and feel it’s going to be special and even better!

Mendez' 49 in 2001 broke Lichti's record of 41 set in 1988-1989.
The NCAA record is 85 set by Darnell Archey (Butler University) 2000-2003 over three seasons. (Wow!)
