This would be a more damning statement if Silva was a starter or in line to be a starter, neither of which is true.

My point was that players vote by transferring, and plenty have to get away from Haase.

Silva was a 4-star recruit and hasn't really developed. That's on Haase (and his crummy "offense").

Get real. He was behind MOC this year and Carlyle is coming in. He knows that his only role at Stanford would be second or third string. He can only start if he transfers to a team where there is a weakness at PG.

I don't think folks here are defending Haase so much as questioning a bad argument.
Something close to 1/3 of all Division I mens basketball players entered the transfer portal last year.* One bench player doing so on one particular team by itself doesn't say much about the coach.

On the other hand, zero NCAA tournament berths and one conference winning record in 7 years says plenty. I see no reason to try to make up stuff beyond that.

* The numbers I found on a quick search were 1649 entries to the transfer portal for Division 1 mens basketball and separately that there were 5522 scholarship athletes. That ratio is 30%.

Not all players get better as they age and their bodies develop. Some players as they mature lose the mechanics of their shot and just can not get it back. I played 3 years of university basketball, and there were multiple teammates who were better as freshman/sophomores than juniors/seniors. 4-stars is a projection not a guarantee. Also, high school players often excel as individuals. Some do not transition well to being team players in university.

I was an unrecruited, walk-on player on my team, but by my junior year was a starter and co-captain. Players who had started their careers at Purdue, BYU, and highly rated high school programs got less minutes than I did. Recruiting ratings and reputation mean nothing once the game starts.

Not sure why Silva has not lived up to his recruiting rating. Coaching does matter but is one of many variables.

This. Guy was massively overrated based on feasting against horrid HS competition.

When he transferred to Prolific Prep to play against DUDES, he was...not good. His ranking tanked (from #30ish down to 70, and in hindsight probably should've been more) because of that. Massive alarm bells that were ignored because "wow, a 4* recruit!!!!".

I rode the hype bandwagon, but the season told the story. If Silva really thinks he can make a meaningful difference in his career elsewhere instead of going for the 40-year decision at Stanford, that's his decision to make.

As a Latino, I wanted Silva to succeed just like Hernandez did 2 decades ago. Instead, I saw Silva as a liability when he was on the court.

I agree that he saw the future and realized that he had to go elsewhere if he wanted to get minutes. I don't think this is a strong case to argue that the coaches failed to develop a player. What I saw was not lack of development/scheme, but limited physical ability/talent.

Obviously he has his reasons for transferring but I just don’t understand it. Maybe I’m wrong and I hope I’m wrong but his pro career outlook is pretty dim. So why not stick around to finish a degree at Stanford for free even if that means very little playing time. I guess Stanford is not for everyone and that is completely okay.

It seems like Stanford worked out well for his cousin.

We saw the same thing with Noah Taitz last year - he transferred sans degree to LMU for playing time. He was 1-for-1 replaced by Michael Jones, which was a clear upgrade. I could see a very similar move happening here, transfer upgrade included (fingers crossed - staff is already looking). Water finds its level.

At any other program, this type of attrition (backup sees writing on wall and leaves to start somewhere else, transfer replacement/upgrade for that player comes in) happens multiple times every offseason. For those who say Stanford should not be like "any other program"...fair enough, but it means when we have a bad player we're usually stuck with him for 4 years. When your team only has 13 spots and a significant number of them are locked in by below-average to bad players for 4 full seasons at a time...yikes.

Please do not let any of my strictly personnel-related speculation be seen as "defending Haase." Noah Taitz leaving and being upgraded upon (not to mention the other not-very-good grad transfer attrition...even Delaire was shaky at San Diego) was not the reason we sucked for the first half then were mediocre for the second half this year, nor will Isa Silva leaving (and potentially being upgraded upon) be the reason we continue to spin the wheel of mediocrity next year.

Haase was actually quoted before the season as saying he was confident in the offense but less confident about the defense. Of course the first half of the season was a horror show until the offense turned the corner, but people fail to realize our defense continued to be second-worst in the conference the entire time. Completely unacceptable.

(By the way, by both defensive rating and defensive box +/-, Silva was the worst defender on the team. Last year, who was the worst defender on the team? Noah Taitz.)

Before the '22-'23 season, Haase acknowledged the lack of speed on defense and said the team would try and use their size to compensate. Tough go in this day and age, when every decent team has both.

Chris Hernandez - my all-time favorite Stanford player.

I have a memory of Chris Hernandez getting fouled shooting a three-pointer as time expired with Stanford down by 3. A regular season game, but one with high stakes, big crowd, ? national TV. So if he misses any of the three free throws, game over. He of course nailed them all, and Stanford went on to win.

Hoping those with more reliable memories can reassure me that indeed, this is a literally accurate memory and not merely a metaphor for his career.
