For the Saban haters. . . . - cardcrimson - 03-21-2023

Alabama has had some issues of late, clearly and certainly. A star basketball player returning a gun to a teammate, who handed it to another teammate  who then killed someone. Allegedly. The star is still playing and the head coach, Nate Oats, downplayed the situation, saying the star was simply "at the wrong spot at the wrong time".

Another player, this one a freshman football player, gets caught driving 141mph, with a lot of cash, a lot of pot, and a loaded weapon. Not only did Saban suspend the player immediately, he appears to take a shot at the Bama hoops coach:

"Everybody's got an opportunity to make choices and decisions," Saban said. "There's no such thing in being in the wrong place at the wrong time. You've got to be responsible for who you're with, who you're around and what you do, who you associate yourself with and the situations that you put yourself in."

"It is what it is, but there is cause and effect when you make choices and decisions that put you in bad situations."


Good for Saban.

Rather than being aimed at the hoops coach, I think Saban was probably taking a shot across the bow of any would-be misbehavers on his own team.  The athlete culture at Alabama that gave rise to men's basketball misbehavior could easily be the same athlete culture of the football team, and Saban knows that he needs to get ahead of this.

Harbaugh had the same sentiment, I think, when he declared that "the cure for cancer won't be found after midnight" when declaring some sort of player curfew.

While that may also be true, Saban was clearly taking a shot at Oats. Confirmed yesterday by my very well connected source in Tuscaloosa.

This is not the first time Saban has taken a principled stand.  This is confusing to me.

Haha alright.  I'm not sad to see internecine conflict at Alabama.
