sorry if it is behind the paywall, but when a university proposes spending $800 million on a new stadium, I wonder if maybe its educational priorities may be a bit screwed up.

Just 17 years ago, it allegedly cost Stanford $90 million to renovate the stadium. That number seems really, really low. . . .

That ship sailed in 1984 when the Supreme Court ruled that the controls exercised by the NCAA over the televising of college football games violated the Sherman Act in the NCAA v. Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma decision. From that point, it was inevitable that we would end up with billion dollar television contracts, coaches earning mid-seven figure salaries annually, and, eventually, players becoming paid employees working under a collective bargaining agreement.

Kind of depends on where they get the money and what things they supposedly can’t do because of it. I think theres an argument that football adds to the college experience. Building a better stadium probably helps them compete. But if it’s taking away money from the English or math department or other academic pursuits, then yeah.

I seem to recall that the rammed earth bowl within which the stadium sat greatly reduced the amount of new construction. Hence the relatively low cost of the new stadium (had to build the upper deck and press box, the rest was just refurbishing). Having Arillaga around helped too.

I think it’s a matter of degree. Football does add to the experience, up to a point. But the modern incarnation of football, with the portal plus NIL masquerading as a poor man’s free agency, ever increasing money for coaches and facilities coming at the expense of educating athletes, and the tail of football wagging the dog of education means we’re now on the other side of the curve, where “more” actually diminishes the experience. Football is no longer about enhancing the experience of students. It’s a race for dollars and prestige.

One of the costs savings advantages that Stanford Stadium had was the abundance of open space directly adjacent to the stadium which allowed for stagging of construction equipment and materials well in advance of when such items would be needed per the construction schedule. Add in also the ease of access to the stadium from El Camino Real/Page Mill Road/101 and 280. The abundance of available area in which to work also reduced the design/engineering constraints of the architects/engineers/construction manager(s).
