Lorcan - 04-07-2023
There are sources reporting that Lauren Betts is in the transfer portal out of Stanford.

Oh no. I'm a casual fan but was really looking forward to her development here at Stanford. It also sends the wrong message to potential recruits. Geez, all that jumping through hoops to get admitted to Stanford and then decide it's the wrong decision? Does Jennings have inside sources to the Stanford team?
FWIW (not much) I thought Betts got the amount of playing time she deserved. There are skills she needs to improve which she will but it takes time. Probably will take the same amount of time at other programs.

It would be a monumental loss if Betts does in fact transfer - Jennings is the senior writer for Women's Basketball at the Athletic - so her news tends to be fairly reliable.

If true that sucks. I think NIL plus the portal are going to kill Stanford WBB. I no longer have a car (got smushed in an accident a couple of weeks ago) and since I live in San Francisco, I can get by just fine without one...except to drive down to Stanford for WBB and WVB. I have decided not to buy another car and watch from afar. I think I am turning into much more casual fan who doesn't really care too much. I'll still follow and chat about it all, but I refuse to invest emotionally in a team or a sport where the players hop all over every season. I wish Betts well, but I'm over it all. TV for me if I feel like it. I used to be a crazy dedicated fan. Not any more. I'm not into it for stressing over who transfers out. I don't know any of the players. I did not attend Stanford. I adopted the team a long time ago, I forget why. They will still sorta be "my" team but not living and dying with them anymore, or anyone else. Thanks for a whole lot of happy memories. It was fun while it lasted. I very much hope we get a WNBA team in Oakland or Chase Center soon. If so that will be my basketball home.

This would be bad. I wonder if some coach of another top team broke rules and reached out to her . . . "
Hey, do you want to win a NC with us? We need a center and can guaranty you will start."

I’m guessing UCLA or Notre Dame. She was very underutilized all year. I thought she should have been on the floor much more than she was. This is the new way for college athletics. Some players are just not willing to wait 2-3 years to get court time so it’s unfortunate and I think our coaches don’t really know how to navigate and balance this. Clearly, a Stanford degree is not the most important thing for every player so we are not immune to this happening and I expect there will be more transfers with time.

If she does transfer, I hope Cam gets a chance to school her in a game.

If true, forget about getting her sister also.
Who's going to backup Cam next year? This is so perplexing. Something's going on, is it NIL?

Wow.
But I think we saw this coming. Tara really never gave her consistent PT. Lauren also knew coming in that we were post-heavy.
Hoping she stays out west and perhaps lands at UCLA. I think she's too academic to go to most schools, but it looks like UConn just followed her on IG.

Well we're not post heavy anymore. Putting a player in for 2 minutes a stretch, and then pulling them after a mistake, doesnt inspire a players confidence. Tara's quick subouts really irked me

If this is true, I don't find it surprising. When you come in at the #1 recruit in the country and find yourself in a limited role, I think it's likely you're going to be disappointed. But the fact is, at least from my inexpert observation, she had a lot of flaws and I kept finding myself wondering just why she'd been so highly regarded. Yes, Tara would pull her after a mistake, but she made a lot of them. She never really got away from that dribble before shooting. And for a player who was described as having "great hands," she let a lot of balls get away from her. All season long, I was wondering when is the player who was #1 going to show up. She did have some really good moments, but was inconsistent. Maybe if she goes elsewhere and gets a lot more playing time, she'll turn out to be really good. But wherever she goes, or stays at Stanford, I think she's still at "work in progress" stage.

If true, another spot is suddenly open and I wonder whether Tara would ever reconsider the portal, even if limited to a grad transfer Still a lot of intriguing players out there.

Well this sucks. No way around that. And we don't have a lot of recruits in the pipeline.
I do agree that the era of Stanford predominance in the highest profile sports is probably over, and NIL is definitely a big part of that.

It is not really reconsider the portal, it is that getting transfers in has been very difficult. Maybe Stanford makes it easier to take transfers for WBB like they are supposedly doing for football. If so, maybe Stanford joins the arms race in a limited way. If not, there are not many in the portal who can even be considered. From tweets posted on Rivals from Betts mother it seems that they did not like how she was used and/or don't like how they think she will be used next season. I thought she was used basically as she ought to have been since early on she was clearly not quite ready and her playing time increased as the season went on to the point she was playing more than Iriafen some games, Prechtel all or almost all games, and even Belibi some games. Now maybe the coaches decided that Brink would play primarily the 5, not much at the 4, which would greatly reduce Betts' playing time, as she is a 5, not really a 4. Does seem early for that sort of decision to be made, but whatever. She is definitely gone. Whatever.

Betts mom responds on twitter to the chronicle reporter who has a tweet about the transfer today:
“With all due respect, your projections or anyone’s projections don’t really don’t mean anything. The coaches make the decisions and none of you have any idea what they might have planned or not planned for Lauren. I won’t respond again but I felt I had to say that.”
Seems to indicate an obvious, disconnect and frustration with the coaches. Please let her go anywhere but UConn. This has been a terrible last month for Stanford WBB. Major major major issues.

I'm not surprised. Her mom has been throwing hints of dissatisfaction in her tweets.
April 2nd: retweeted a post about Jasmine Carson's big game in the national championship game and added the caption "Using your bench [lightbulb emoji]"
March 30: retweeted a post about Dawn Staley and added the caption "People will try and deny that representation matters."
March 30: retweeted a post about a survey of players in this year's Sweet 16 about who they wish would have been added to their team and added the caption "Don't sleep on the value of a great post player."
March 28: retweeted a post about how black players being coached by black coaches is crucial to their development
March 28: retweeted a post about "getting your worth"
and, most importantly, March 28th, retweet a post about NIL and added: “What is clear and grows increasingly clearer is that the predictions about how NIL was going to ruin everything was just the latest “sky-is-falling” act from College Sports Inc.,which was and still is bent on maintaining control of the money by any means necessary.”#scaretactics
If you read into these tweets it suggest 3 reasons for her leaving: 1) unhappy about insufficient NIL opportunities, 2) unhappy about playing time (lack of star treatment by Stanford), and 3) general unhappiness with Tara and Kate. Seeing Angel Reese's success after transferring surely didn't help either.
My guess is she will end up at South Carolina, Iowa or UConn (most likely South Carolina).

Her mom responding in past tense "planned or not planned" is ominous. Does look like she's gone, and I'm very surprised. She seemed to enjoy playing here.

lol at "use your bench" and maybe going to UConn, with Geno notorious for not using his bench even when up 40. I know that is just a guess and maybe a good guess, but I find that a funny combo if it would become true.
