Spring Game - murky - 04-17-2023

Isn't spring game this weekend.  I guess there isn't much to say huh?

RE: Spring Game - fullmetal - 04-17-2023

I mean, Taylor isn't trumpeting the team loudly to the press, so he probably knows that the program is working through issues.  No false hopes, right?  Let's hope he's working on a really good recruiting class.  Sigh.

What is the format?

the only info I've seen is

Quote:The Cardinal and White Spring Showcase is set for Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. at Stanford Stadium. The open practice will be part of Stanford Athletics' day-long 'Cardinalpalooza' celebration.

A BIG NUTHIN
I stumbled onto a rerun of it on P12 Network under "Cardinal"... about 20 minutes in shorts and shoulder pads.
Some 7 on 7 with the two QBs, Patu and Daniels.  Not even a regular practice.
Either... Taylor did not want to reveal anything.      Or... there was not much to reveal.
EJ Smith took some snaps, but no contact.  Mostly WRs running routes on the DBs.

Other pubs are touting young 4-star Myles Jackson from Millikin
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10063954-quarterbacks-in-the-2023-cfb-recruiting-class-with-a-shot-to-start-as-freshmen

Video shows a strong arm, and he can scramble.  Put up big numbers as a Senior at Millikan Long Beach (3600 yds, 47 TDs).

Taylor knows QBs.  He will make the right call on timing for Jackson, after giving each of Patu and Daniels a shot.

Is this a true or a hyperbolic statement?

Stanford Football at this moment in time has the gravitas of the Oakland A’s in MLB.

Make your case. Part of the answer is revealed by the number of replies to the question…

RE: Spring Game - JohnR34231 - 05-04-2023

To say that most of us are going into the football season with low expectations might be an overstatement.
If we can beat Hawaii and Sac State, win a couple of conference games (not sure against whom) and at least be somewhat competitive against the conference heavyweights I think the season will be considered a success.
Supposedly Elijah Brown, one of the top QB's in the 2024 class is interested in Stanford. Maybe he will be the Andrew Luck that leads us out of the wilderness.

RE: Spring Game - PVTree - 05-04-2023

After many years of top QBs with Stanford interest going elsewhere, it would be a much welcomed change if one of them is wanted by and actually picks Stanford.

There is discussion every day for $9.99/month, but you knew that.

Unfortunately I agree with this, but will be watching intently for signs of life: competitiveness, culture change, and S&C especially. This ground-up rebuild is gonna take a couple years minimum so my expectations in the W-L column are low.

A great metric posited by msqueri for competitiveness was "number of games in which we play like a top 25 team." These don't have to be wins; close losses against good teams (e.g. losing by 2 to what turned out to be a very good Oregon State last year) count, while closer wins against bad teams (e.g. only beating a bad ASU by 1 last year) clearly don't.

Shaw's most recent season had a pathetic 2, and Taylor is inheriting a significantly less talented team thanks to nearly all the starters leaving. If he can take this lack of talent and produce a few top-25-competitive games in year one, I consider it a very good sign we have something here. (FWIW, Harbaugh's first year with a similarly untalented team produced 4 such games...which happened to be the 4 wins in 4-8.)

And yes, Brown is interested.

RE: Spring Game - ADPinWDC - 05-04-2023

Elijah Brown from Mater Dei is Super Elite... #3 in USA for 2024.
Already has offers from Bama, GEOG, every Pac12 school will want him.
Why wouldn't he go to Lincoln Riley and U$C?  Williams leaves after 2023.
https://youtu.be/BrZlc7Ko4qI
At UCLA he would have to fight Dante Moore for snaps.
Oregon needs a new QB after Bo Nix.
My guess is that SoCal Brown would like to stay in a warm water port, so NDAM, MICH, OHST, PNST fall off.
Why throw in the snow?

Coming out of Mater Dei is like a JUCO transfer because you are playing against a lot of 4-stars, headed to other D1 schools.

RE: Spring Game - JohnR34231 - 05-05-2023

One reason Brown might not want to go to U$C is that the Condoms have 5 star QB Malachi Nelson coming in as a freshman this year.
Now they say the best of the best don't fear competition, but still........

RE: Spring Game - SamuelMcF - 05-05-2023

Another reason Brown might not want to be a Condom is because he isn't #1 on the Condoms' board and they are slow playing him. (This may turn around to bite said Condoms if they don't get their #1.)

He is far and away #1 on our board, being our only 2024 QB offer.

FWIW 247 Sports has U$C's #1 going to Georgia. It also has Brown slightly favoring UCLA now, where of course he would be a year behind another five star QB.

As other schools can use the free agency transfer portal without restrictions Stanford could be viewed with better opportunities in terms of roster stability, this may aid in the recruiting efforts.

RE: Spring Game - OutsiderFan - 05-06-2023

Will Stanford be the worst team in FBS, or just Power 5? It's truly remarkable just how much destruction David Shaw could do to the program he led to three conference championships the previous decade.

It almost makes me think Stanford's administration and feckless Athletic Director are at fault more than the coach was.

It was a breathtaking case of -1 + -1 = -3.
