From the Athletic: Under Shaw, Stanford #1 in getting 5 star recruits into the NFL - Snorlax94 - 04-19-2023

And Stanford was among the best at getting 3 star recruits drafted, as well.

Overall, it was one of the best in the nation at developing talent in terms of realizing student athletes’ dreams to play in the NFL.

Maybe it shouldn’t be so surprising that many former staff members like Pritchard found such good next jobs, and that Shaw was considered for the top job in Denver.

“ The Athletic dug into 11 years of data to find the answer. For three-, four- and five-star prospects, which schools had the highest percentage of prospects drafted?

Using the 247Sports Composite Rating, we tallied the total three-, four- and five-star prospects signed at each of the 65 Power 5 programs from 2009 through 2019 and how many of each star rating were drafted from 2012 through 2022 in the seven-round event that features more than 250 picks each year. Then we tallied the percentages for each school. The top and bottom 10 featured some usual suspects and some surprises.

Choosing perennial Playoff programs is overrated
The magnetic attraction of elite prospects to Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and Clemson, recent fixtures on the sport’s biggest stage, is undeniable.

And while choosing those schools might mean reaching the Playoff, it does not correlate with a significantly higher chance of reaching the NFL. The landscape is littered with five-star prospects who did not attend a blue-blooded program yet were still selected in the first-round of the NFL Draft.

Stanford is an outlier
Stanford’s program slipped in recent years, but the Cardinal ranked among the best at turning three-stars into pros. And no one was better at converting five-star prospects into draft picks. Defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (49ers, 2017) and offensive lineman Andrus Peat (Saints, 2015) both arrived as five-stars and left as first-round picks. Offensive lineman Walker Little (Jaguars, 2021) and quarterback Davis Mills (Texans, 2021) were also picked after signing with Stanford as five-stars.”

Why did it slip???

P.S. my question is a joke. 99% know why it slipped.

The key to the analysis under Shaw:

Using the 247Sports Composite Rating, we tallied the total three-, four- and five-star prospects signed at each of the 65 Power 5 programs from 2009 through 2019 and how many of each star rating were drafted from 2012 through 2022.

Couldn't have picked a better time frame to make him look good. Wonder how the analysis will look in a few years after the last five of Shaw's classes. Purely a conjecture, but I'd doubt we'd remain on top. . . .

Zero 5-stars signed after that time frame, so the ratio remains intact and we'd remain on top. Can't mess up the ratio if there are no additions to mess up ;)

4-stars and 3-stars? Likely a different story.

Well, at least Shaw went out on top on something. . ..

You would think the 5 star-to-NFL and 3 star-to-NFL effect would allow better recruiting of more five star recruits.

Thanks for pointing this out.
It also made me read that the Athletic draft guru thinks Michael Wilson and Kyu Blu Kelly are 2 of the Pac-12’s most overlooked players in the upcoming draft.

Also behind a paywall.

I don't think they are looking at this correctly.

Stanford pushed 5 out of 6 five-stars (83%) to the NFL.  Wow 83 percent!

Alabama on the other hand "only" sent 68 percent of their five-stars to the NFL.  But they sent 30 five-stars to the NFL and they had 44 5-stars during the same period.  Thirty is significantly more than 5 over any time frame.  It is the raw number that is far more important than percentage.

Let's aim for sending 1 out of 1?  100 percent!

No, the outliers are Bama, UGA, Ohio State, FSU, etc. by the sheer numbers of high-level college and NFL talent they have.

I suppose it is comforting that Stanford was like Miami, Penn State, and the like.  For awhile until it all fell off a cliff.
