MVB in MPSF finals at Maples - Nan3cy - 04-22-2023

I’m a little surprised to see no comment on this yet. Stanford beat BYU in the semis Thursday night, just a week after being beaten twice by BYU in Provo. They’re playing UCLA, the top seed in the tournament, at 6 pm tonight. We finally got to a match a few weeks ago and found them a fun team to watch. If anyone has the sort of non-exciting social lives that we do — come on out and support the team.

Well, rats. Got swept by UCLA for the third time this year. The good guys were in all the sets (getting 22, 21 and 23 points) — but I never had the feeling that UCLA was not in control of the match.

What makes it more interesting is that Stanford lost to BYU 3-1 pm Friday, then 3-0 in the last match of the season eight days ago. They lost 22, 23, and 19. That's not getting clobbered, not exactly, but BYU had 24 errors and Stanford had 37, about typical for Stanford for a three game match.

A different Stanford team showed up in the playoffs. They split with USC in the regular season (both games in LA), then took the first match of the playoffs 3-1. Stanford lost the first set, 19-25; then went on to win the next three games, 25-21, 26-24 and 25-15. USC was sloppy with 41 errors, Stanford got away with 49 errors. Stanford outdistanced USC, 59 kills to 36.

Stanford lost twice to #6 BYU in the regular season, 1-3 and 0-3, both in Utah. Stanford won a five set thriller, again on offense with 63 kills to BYU's 50.

Stanford lost 3-0 to UCLA in the league final, but there's some encouraging takeaways. In their first match this season, at Stanford, UCLA beat us 12-25, 12-25, 12-25.  Second 3-0 loss to UCLA wasn't much better. This final match, also played at Stanford, was 25-18, 25-20, 25-21. Rottman and Snoey had rough outings. Still...Stanford finished 15-13. There's some good things to build upon.

I came over to Maples after the Beach VB senior day ceremony (arrived late in the second set).
First time I've been to a men's match in a few years.  Was fun to watch, though a loss.

I was surprised that for the conference championship, where they are charging admission, and they got an attendance of over 1700, there were no concessions open, except for the little snack stand.

They usually have decent crowds, with essentially no concessions. Weird.
