A great Stanford sports weekend - Spiny_Norman - 04-30-2023

Women's tennis won the P12 championship
Men's golf won the P12 championship
Women's water polo won the MPSF championship
Softball swept ASU
Baseball won 2 of 3 from UCLA
Beach volleyball knocked off UCLA for the first time ever

Stanford fans had a lot to cheer about this weekend.

Now we move into May, the busiest month of the sports season. NCAA championship competitions in men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, women's water polo, softball, and beach volleyball.

Go Stanford! Beat everyone!

All Right Now!

I'll take it after a few depressing months on the football, MBB, and WBB front! Lovely to see we're still kicking @$$ and taking titles across a range of Olympics sports!

Handicapping the teams moving forward:

1.  WWP
2.  Women's Golf
3.  Men's Golf
4.  Softball
5.  Baseball
6.  Beach VP

Seems no doubt that WWP has best chance for another Natty, followed by Women's Golf.
Women's golf chances at risk due to injuries.  Men's Golf need at least 1 of the bottom 2 guys on the team to play well each day, and might need both.  Softball needs more hitting most of all, then better fielding. Still a bit of a reach for the women to make the finals.  Baseball desperately needs consistent pitching.  Making the CWS will be tough, but then it always is.

Thanks Spiny, I hope after next weekend you will have more good news to report on this thread.

GK3, I agree with your handicapping.  For the two teams here I follow:

Softball:  Pitching can compete with any team in the country.  Hitting is not at the level of the best teams.

Beach VB:  Best team so far in Stanford beach history.  Just not quite good enough to beat the very best teams.

I love the change of pace between Vawter and Canady, particularly when a change is made mid game.

My $0.02.

WWP - should definitely make the finals, a toss up if they win. It seems that a lot in water polo is dependent on the officiating, what they see and what they call. USC will pressure Stanford to the limit and beyond. But this is the best chance for another NC this season for Stanford.

Women's golf - should advance to the NCAA championships, a toss up if they make match play, then a crap shoot. Even with 4 All Americans playing last season, Stanford was a single hole away from being knocked out in the quarters and the semis. The two mainstays who won all 3 of their match play matches, Aline Krauter and Brooke Seay, are not around this season.

Men's golf - maybe 60-70% that they advance to the NCAA championships, then 25-30% chance of making match play. The team just played its best golf of the season, but can they keep it going away from Stanford GC? They have not been consistent at all. But it is a very experienced team - 2 juniors, a senior, a 5th year and a 6th year.

Women's tennis - playing well right now but they still have not defeated a team ranked ahead of them. They might be able to compete with the best teams in the country, but they have not proven it yet. Stanford has not advanced to the Elite Eight since 2019. That's probably a reasonable expectation for this team - Elite Eight. Unlikely to advance beyond that. But Lele's past teams were famous for overachieving vs. their seeding.

Softball and baseball - hope they can each make a Super Regional and we'll see beyond that. The real treat would be softball which has not played in a College World Series since 2004. You just feel that baseball needs to tighten up on fundamentals, like pitching, defense and advancing runners, to have a great post-season.

Beach volleyball - a game I am just learning, but it's always great to see Stanford at a national championship event.
