Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - Spiny_Norman - 05-01-2023

Stanford is the #7 overall seed. On Friday at Stanford, the Cardinal plays Weber State and Denver plays Oklahoma State with the winners playing on Saturday.

Should Stanford advance, they would host a super regional, most likely against 10 seed Ohio State.

For those keeping track at home, the ACC has 5 of the top 16 seeds, SEC has 4, 3 for the Big 12, 2 for the Big 10, 1 WCC, 1 P12.

Getting the #7 overall seed seems about right to me. Stanford beat #8 seed Texas, but lost to #4 seed Georgia and #6 seed Duke.

I pity the number 10 and number 2 seeds!

They want no part of the Tree.

beat Weber State 4-0 up next Oklahoma State

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - Spiny_Norman - 05-06-2023

On paper, this is a tough round of 32 match. Oklahoma State is ranked 17th, significantly higher than the 26th ranked team Stanford (as the #7 seed) would have played in the 2nd round if the pairings exactly matched the ranking. OSU also is ranked higher than any team Stanford played in the Pac 12.

Which is just to say that this could be a very close match. The doubles point is critical, as it will be for the rest of the tournament.

The match was supposed to begin at 1 pm but it appears to be in a weather delay. New estimated start time is 2 pm.

While we wait,  here's an article about some Pac12 awards the team earned.

Tight match, we only won 3 first sets.
Second sets are basically even; Yepifanova at #1 failed to hold serve to win her second set and even up her match. now at 5-6.
Blake won her first set at #3 but is behind 2-5 in the second set
Blokhina at #4 is starting a third set.
Choy won first set in a close tiebreaker, now starting second set.
This could go either way, good thing we won the doubles point!

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - Spiny_Norman - 05-06-2023

Yepifanova lost a 2nd set tiebreaker and lost the match. She seemed to be really bothered by the wind.

Xu won in straight sets at #5.

All other matches have gone to a 3rd set.

Blokhina got up a break in the 3rd which carried her to a 6-4 win. Stanford now up 3-1. They have to win one of the 3 remaining singles matches.

Blake was up a break in her match at #3. She was serving for a 5-2 lead. But she got broken and now leads 4-3.

Stanford takes the doubles point against Ohio State. All 3 teams won their sets. Stanford leads 1-0.

Stanford close to the doubles win

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - Lorcan - 05-12-2023

Stanford wins 4-1, behind the doubles point and wins from Xu, Yepifanova, and Blake. Connie Ma was swept off the court in slightly surprising fashion, dropping her match 6-1 6-4. Something to keep an eye on moving forward.

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - TheFarm07 - 05-12-2023

We win 4-1!

We cruised in securing the doubles point as none of our three teams dropped more than 2 games in their individual matches.

Angelina Blake served up a double bagel and it looks like Alexandra Yepifanova also won pretty easily dropping only 3 games herself to give Stanford a 3-0 lead.

Ohio State got on the board as Connie Ma fell in straight sets 1-6, 4-6.

It looked like the Buckeyes were able to inch closer on Court 4 after Alexis Blokhina got shut out in the first set, but she forced a third set after winning the second in a tiebreak.

However, it was Valencia Xu on Court 5 who advances the team into the Quarterfinals with a straight sets win.

Sara Choy was up a set and in a tight second set on Court 6, so we had a couple options to wrap up the victory.

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - Spiny_Norman - 05-12-2023

Stanford wins 4-1 in a match in which it always seemed to be in control.

Singles results
Yepifanova 6-2, 6-1 Stanford
Ma 1-6, 4-6 Ohio State
Blake 6-0, 6-0 Stanford
Blokhina 0-6, 7-6 unfinished
Xu 7-5, 6-0 Stanford
Choy 6-4, 4-5 unfinished

RE: Women's Tennis - NCAA championships - TheFarm07 - 05-12-2023

We are the only Pac-12 team to advance this far as the only other Sweet 16 conference team UCLA couldn't continue their run after knocking out #6 Duke, falling to #11 Iowa State.
